ESGR held its prestigious annual Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award at the Pentagon today. The Freedom Award is the highest honor an employer can receive after being nominated by National Guard or Reserve employees as a recognition to the employers support for military duties. “The support you give is extraordinary, because our reserve components have been very busy for the last 24 years. That’s not going to change, because, as we sit here today, we have nearly 50,000 reservists somewhere deployed on every continent of this world. That’s in addition to all the Guard members called up to support their state mission during hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disasters. So, to have extraordinary employer’s supporting your reservist so they can do what they signed up to do which is support our nation’s defense is very, very thankful.” ~John Sampa, ESGR National Chair #ESGR #FreedomAwards

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense program that seeks to promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees. We recognize outstanding support, increase awareness of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), and resolve conflicts between Service members and employers through mediation. The citizen warriors who serve in the National Guard and Reserve components could not defend and protect us at home and abroad without the continued promise of meaningful civilian employment for themselves and their families. ESGR is supported by a network of nearly 3,400 volunteers in 54 committees located across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam-CNMI (Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands), Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Volunteers, hailing from small business and industry, government, education, and prior military service bring a vast wealth of experience to assist in serving employers, Service members, and their families.

This is one of the many reasons I do this job - recognizing the support and indeed the sacrifices made by those who employ our Reserve Component Service Members. A primary project I work on each year is running the selection process that ultimately results in the fifteen annual recipients of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. It's a long and sometimes frustrating process but an overwhelmingly rewarding one. Congratulations and Well Done to these employers for 2024. Five public sector employers, five large businesses (500+ employees), and five small businesses. All deserving and we at ESGR thank you all. Oh, and maybe best of all, I get to emcee the awards ceremony in the Pentagon next month where each recipient will be there along with their Service Member employees. Really looking forward to that.

In a historic ESGR event, out-going ESGR National Chair Ron Bogel swears in incoming National Chair, John Sampa during ESGR's New State Chair training at the Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia today.
