Clinical trials are a rigorous test of a drug's safety and efficacy, with 9 in 10 drugs failing the test. In our latest journal article, Daniel Domingo-Fernández and team investigated which molecules are most likely to pass clinical trials, with surprising results! As described in the accompanying blog post, natural products (molecules derived from natural sources, such as a medicinal plant) are vastly underrepresented in the early stages of drug discovery. However, the proportion of natural products increases with each stage of clinical trials, showing they have a higher chance of success than synthetic molecules. This research contributes to our deeply held belief that natural products are the best, most underutilized source of new medicines on the planet and further inspires our work to build technologies that can identify new natural products faster than ever before. Dr. Trevejo is a great fit for our team, having driven clinical strategy from proof-of-concept to FDA approval and early commercialization. His extensive experience will guide our first candidates into clinical trials later this year and set them on the path to a rapid PoC. Dr. Trevejo’s expertise in immunology, GI, dermatology, cardiac, and metabolic disease will be incredibly valuable for our broad portfolio.
