Cosmos and MyChart and AI, oh my! UGM 2024 has been a tale for the ages, and it isn’t done yet. Today, we cap the week with Global Day.   At Exec Address and Cool Stuff Ahead, we discussed our plans for generative AI, ambient listening in the exam room, Cosmos insights at the point of care (Best Care Choices for My Patient, Look-Alikes, and Diagnosis Advisor), MyChart, enhancing collaboration between payers and providers, surgical supply efficiency, and a whole lot more.    “We've woven Cosmos, MyChart, and the Health Grid into all of our software, and as they continue to grow in scale, so does the potential for meaningful impact, and they’re getting turbocharged with AI,” said Sumit Rana, who leads R&D here at Epic. Notch another win against note bloat. To reduce note length and improve note quality in inpatient contexts, Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego updated note templates in Epic to include “disappearing help text”—in-line suggestions and reminders that help clinicians know what’s needed (and what’s not) in their documentation. Their efforts have reduced inpatient progress note length by nearly 19% and median admission note length by more than 6—saving clinicians time, and making it easier to find the information that matters most. The notes were also higher quality: the number of coding queries—when a coder has to ask the clinician for more details about a patient’s visit or admission to bill appropriately—decreased by 14%. In June, we partnered with UW Health to organize an AI summit in DC, bringing together experts from across the country to discuss the technology’s use in healthcare. Last week, the summit published a report with recommendations for policymakers as they consider AI’s future. The report covers numerous themes, including workforce support, patient care, data validation and privacy, and bringing AI to healthcare organizations in rural and low-resource settings. Vaccination can prevent more than 90% of cancers caused by HPV, but HPV remains prevalent. About 13 million people get HPV each year, and more than 36,000 are estimated to be diagnosed with a cancer caused by HPV annually. Two members of the Epic community—The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) and South Boston Community Health Center—have worked to reduce HPV rates by getting kids a head start on the vaccination series, beginning at the age of 9 rather than 12. They trained clinicians on the importance of early vaccination, added a reminder in Epic that appears during visits with eligible patients, and made it easy to order the vaccine from their familiar Epic workflows. As a result, MetroHealth increased the percentage of 9- and 10-year-olds receiving the vaccine from below 5% to above 20%, and SBCHC increased its completion rate for patients aged 13-15 by more than 50%. Yesterday, we released new functionality that will streamline patients’ ability to share their health information with health apps.   Our development is in support of TEFCA, a government-sponsored interoperability framework that will provide a single on-ramp to a wide variety of exchange use cases. No more one-off connections or agreements needed. With the new functionality in place, it will be easier for apps to make their services available to patients across a trusted ecosystem. It will also be easier for patients—the true owners of their health data—to know what data they are being asked to share and to understand what the app intends to do with their data prior to sharing.   Read more: https://lnkd.in/g8PmkWQF #healthcare #healthIT #interoperability

When care delivery is inconsistent, it can lead to higher costs and worse clinical outcomes. Our friends at Yale New Haven Health are making significant progress addressing this issue by creating a standardized model for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating certain medical conditions. They call this their Care Signature Initiative. Using Epic, clinicians can automatically generate care plans for patients with a specific issue, like COVID-19 or alcohol use disorder. Since its launch in late 2019, Yale New Haven Health has successfully developed over 600 Care Signature Pathways. "We have gotten to a reduction in variation that has been a bedrock of quality improvement for years," says Chief Clinical Officer Thomas Balcezak, MD, MPH.
