Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., is a non-profit law firm which provides community education and legal representation to Southern California’s most vulnerable immigrant communities. Esperanza provides legal representation to immigrants who are in detention and/or removal proceedings, and focuses on particularly complex immigration cases which may involve unaccompanied minors, adults with mental health issues, and cases with past criminal or gang history. Esperanza also provides community education programming and pro se assistance to immigrants in removal proceedings both in detained and non-detained settings. Esperanza has proudly provided legal services to immigrants and their families in Los Angeles for over 15 years.

A busy summer at Esperanza continues! This June we organized a clinic with Winston & Strawn's LA office to help unrepresented folks to file asylum applications. Steven Shafer led a training for more than 70 attorneys on Special Immigrant Juvenile status in California probate court. As a free service to our community, we publish a weekly jobs service of employment opportunities available to public interest practitioners. 94 postings this week, with a new one from Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, which is seeking a Staff Attorney (Los Angeles, CA) [$64,480 - $76,777] to work primarily in their Representation Program, assisting detained and non-detained immigrants in removal proceedings. The Staff Attorney will work primarily under the National Qualified Representative Program (NQRP) pursuant to the Franco-Gonzales v. Holder class action. Under this program, the Staff Attorney is appointed as Qualified Representative for individuals with mental disabilities who are facing deportation and are unable to represent themselves in court. Representation will include litigating complex and interesting cases in immigration court, including cases that involve asylum, cancellation of removal, creative arguments against removability, and “crimmigration.”

CNM joins the County of Los Angeles Office of Immigrant Affairs in announcing the second cohort of grant recipients, made possible through the American Rescue Plan. Each organization will receive a grant of $150K to incorporate case management into their existing legal services for immigrants, along with skill building and training led by CNM.
