We’re working with the Zambian government to bring dual HIV/syphilis testing and treatment to save thousands of babies from the devastating effects of congenital syphilis. Namakau Nyambe, Evidence Action's Zambia country director, is leading the expansion of Syphilis-Free Start in the country. “I’m now blessed to be here and given the opportunity to help pregnant women across the country have healthy babies, free from the issues that result from untreated maternal syphilis," Namakau says. Government ownership and leadership in health and education programs are essential for protecting children's health and unlocking their full potential. In a recent meeting with Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, Executive Secretary of Nigeria's Universal Basic Education Commission, we discussed the collaborative impact of our deworming program. By investing in school-based deworming to reach millions of children, we significantly reduce school absenteeism, foster healthy development, and contribute to Nigeria's economic growth. Liberia is making remarkable strides in the fight against congenital syphilis! Our partnership with the government helped increase national syphilis screening coverage from 7% to 68% in just 2.5 years.
