It's been an eye-opening experience to participate in the BuiltWorlds Venture East conference in Miami this week. #constructiontech is strategic for owner/operators/developers like Fairstead where we have our own #design, #construction and #generalcontracting operations. This makes the construction tech sector very interesting for Fairstead Ventures. My session was on corporate #venturecapital investing in #sustainability within the built environment, along with Julieta Moradei and Ben Price. I am not an expert in construction, but I work with many of them within Fairstead like Marco Williamson, Michael Bivas, RA , Matthew Nicoletti, Lauren Jolliver, Jeff Cordisco and Ellen Shakespear. I learned a great deal at Builtworlds about the innovations and investment strategies being made to increase productivity, sustainability and profitability. We had a great panel at the Blueprint conference this morning discussing views of ESG, Real Estate and Strategic VC investing. Fairstead Ventures has a fairly unique perspective, in that we can leverage Fairstead's RE portfolio to accelerate investments sustainable solutions. The overall conference has been a great mix of people, tech , finance, presentations and lots and lots of discussions with startups, investors, owners and operators. It has also been fun running into many familiar faces, and meeting new ones.

While the global effects of climate change have grown increasingly obvious in recent years, companies in the real estate industry (whose buildings contribute 40% of the world’s carbon emissions) have adapted to the new reality in fits and starts. ESG as a concept has gained a lot of traction, but companies continue to be guided by their bottom line. Michael (Mick) Gilbert, Linda J. Isaacson, Minta Kay and Laura Probst will look at the push towards carbon neutrality and the different levers that can help companies make sustainability a key focus.
