In 2017, Northwood Office acquired the 535-acre Ballantyne Corporate Park and quickly set to work remaking it by introducing residential, retail and community spaces in an effort to create a vibrant mixed-use community. Around the same time, it also hired a new president, John Barton, to oversee that effort, which became known as the ambitious “Ballantyne Reimagined” project. Now, seven years later, I recently had the chance to talk with him about the thinking behind "Ballantyne Reimagined," which this spring and summer has had a series of restaurant openings in the area known as "The Bowl," including The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, North Italia, Flower Child, Bossy Beulah's, Harriet's Hamburgers and others — in addition to a 5,000-seat amphitheater and stream park. Apartments are under construction, and the excitement over the pending arrival of Wegmans Food Markets is, shall we say, palpable. We discussed: ◼️ The transformation of Ballantyne from an office park to a dynamic, mixed-use community. ◼️ The surprising reaction to Wegmans' announcement of a new store in Ballantyne. ◼️ The challenges and successes of this massive redevelopment and what lies ahead.
