Tellurium is a crucial component in First Solar's thin film semiconductor, and at the Rio Tinto Kennecott mine in Magna, Utah, it’s refined from copper mining waste tailings. First Solar gives tellurium new life as the most eco-efficient photovoltaic semiconductor available today. Just one kilogram of First Solar’s tellurium-based semiconductor can be recycled 41x to produce clean energy for over 1,200 years. First Solar is proud to commission its new Ohio R&D innovation center, believed to be the largest facility of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. It covers 1.3 million square feet and includes a high-tech pilot manufacturing line to produce full-sized prototypes of thin film and tandem PV modules. The Jim Nolan Center is part of an approximately half-billion-dollar investment by First Solar in R&D infrastructure in Ohio, which also includes a perovskite development line that’s expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2024.
