Maddox has a story to tell, as he was born 10 weeks early at 2 pounds 5 ounces. Being bedside throughout Maddox's journey has allowed his parents to perform Kangaroo Care, an essential skin-to-skin contact between parent and baby. This contact promotes bonding and stabilizes the baby, allowing Maddox to grow and thrive. His mom and Dad said they are forever grateful to the Fisher House and the opportunity to continue to work during their visit so they can take maternity leave when Maddox returns home. #FisherHouse #family #NICU #baby #militaryfamily #home

#MissionMonday It is always humbling when a family shares their story and reminds us why we do what we do. A veteran and former Fisher House guest shared her experience as she cared for her ill husband, who is also a veteran. "In around 92 or 93, my husband was so sick, and he was in the hospital for almost a year, but they kept sending him back and forth to Keesler. Luckily, I homeschooled, but my son and I, each day, we had to pack up and move from room to room to see if they had availability in lodging. It wasn’t until then that someone had told me about the Fisher House. You saved our sanity, and it was like a home away from home. Everyone helped each other, we supported each other, and we made meals together. I could be making a meal, and my son would be playing on the play set out back, and I could watch him out the window in the kitchen. I just want to say thank you so very, very much for all that you do. We live in Georgia so we were driving back and forth and we would always watch his medical plane take off and then we’d get in the car and drive. Today, we remember the Native American Marines who served as code talkers during World War II. The code talkers used their native language to help the Allies secure victory in the Pacific. The history of code talkers dates back to WWI. Throughout history, hundreds of Native American servicemen from more than 20 tribes used their Indigenous languages to send secret messages that enemies couldn’t break. Harry Richardson, an Army Vietnam Veteran, and his wife Karen have seen a lot of life together in 40 years of marriage.
