Meet Dr. Charles Sidman, Associate Director of Research at Florida Sea Grant. His extensive knowledge and vast years of experience have consistently proven instrumental to the successful execution of the programs he has been affiliated with. When asked what the most fun part of your job is, Charles shared the following sentiment: “I appreciate the structure, opportunity, and flexibility that Florida Sea Grant and its academic setting provide to inspire my creativity and channel my utility and my relevancy towards helping others. In addition to administrative duties that support Florida Sea Grant’s research program, I am fortunate to have led and/or to be involved in a variety of applied research projects that span boating and waterways planning, Caribbean fisheries management, and more recently serving as the member of a program management team guiding a Gulf of Mexico-wide sustainable angling program, called Return Em Right. It is the people who I work with who inspire me and provide me with a sense of community, purpose, and accomplishment. I am a people person so, in this sense, it is the bond I share with my colleagues and our collective commitment to similar causes that makes my work most enjoyable for me.” Charles expressed the tremendous value he found in working with both Caribbean and international counterparts to stimulate co-managed fisheries and fortify the livelihoods of those engaged in fishing. This notable undertaking, attached to Charles's 26-year association with Florida Sea Grant, has been a profoundly enriching experience both personally and professionally for him.
