  • Our 3rd Annual Harlem BBQ was full of smiles, dancing, and most importantly FOOD 🧡 For the New Yorkers we serve, summer can be a time of struggle and stress when trying to ensure that they have the food they need to thrive. Aside from our day to day services, our yearly barbecue allows the community to come together (stress-free!) in celebration with delicious food, music, activities, and fresh produce to take home.

We are saddened to share the news of the passing of one of our beloved community partners and founder of the Agatha House Foundation, Jeannette Joseph-Greenaway. When Jeannette first joined forces with Food Bank For New York City nearly a decade ago, her unwavering dedication to serving her Bronx neighbors was immediately evident. She always asked, "What else can I do?" and enthusiastically approached every challenge. From navigating SNAP benefits to Mobile Pantry operations, Jeanette's commitment never wavered. Jeannette actively participated in various Food Bank programs and other initiatives, including special Mother's Day food distributions, summer programs, hot meal distributions during the pandemic in collaboration with local restaurants, Easter Egg hunts, Christmas toy distributions, and organizing tours for our donors. She served as a consultant to our organization and a valuable thought partner for emergency food programs across NYC. She also participated in Food Bank's masterclass series, sharing her expertise with other agencies to help them serve New Yorkers in need more efficiently. Jeannette was an unwavering resource, embodying the spirit of kindness and collaboration. As a Food Bank Agency Advisory Committee Member, Jeannette played a pivotal role in shaping our strategies, exploring new opportunities, and offering feedback to enhance Food Bank's operations. She led workshops, provided guidance to partner agencies, and remained passionate about improving our collective impact on the community. Jeannette's dedication to serving others persisted even while she was in the hospital, where she was actively planning a community baby shower with her team. She never slowed down, never took a break, and worked tirelessly until the very end. Her fighting spirit was truly commendable. We remain committed to preserving Jeannette's legacy and collaborating with her team, including her daughters and husband, to ensure her vision lives on. Her profound impact resonates with many of our Food Bank staff members personally, inspiring us to honor her memory and do more for the community. Jeannette welcomed us into her home and Agatha House and volunteered alongside some of our own families. As we mourn this significant loss, we celebrate the light Jeannette brought into our lives and are inspired to continue her monumental legacy.

The vibes were immaculate at Greywind Restaurant and Bakery this week, where our Eat For Good event raised enough to provide over 285,000 meals for New Yorkers! The dynamic menu, designed by James Beard Award-winning chefs Dan Kluger and Stephanie Izard, showcased their perfect culinary synergy. A great meal and an even greater cause - we look forward to many more evenings like this. Thank you to everyone who attended, and a huge shout out to our event sponsors: Bank of America, Tito's Handmade Vodka, Sanpellegrino, and Kind of Wild Wines! #NYC #EatForGood #GiveBack

Our very own Leslie G. sheds light on the pressing issue of child hunger in NYC in a recent op-ed featured in amNewYork. As #NYC schools switch to summer break, many kids experience reduced access to nutritious meals, leaving families to face the challenge of providing additional meals for their children who heavily rely on free school meals.   In a city where 23.5% of children live in food-insecure households—equating to over 416,000 kids struggling to access sufficient nutrition—support from food banks, summer programs, and soup kitchens becomes crucial.   Despite the availability of resources, many eligible children miss out due to a lack of awareness or accessibility. It's imperative to enhance access to food assistance programs and resources, like those offered by Food Bank in partnership with community allies.   Dive into the full article to discover how we can unite in the fight against child hunger in NYC: https://bit.ly/4bQLmTT
