Earlier this month, the Food Bank had the pleasure of welcoming members from City Sprouts. City Sprouts—a nonprofit organization based in Omaha—is a nonprofit that works with and educates the community to grow food using sustainable techniques. City Sprouts partnered with Food Bank for the Heartland since 2021 to deliver fresh produce to its pantry partners. We were delighted to give our guests a tour of the Food Bank. Following the tour, they generously volunteered their time with us! During their shift, the group packed 91 community boxes and 731 bags! We are beyond grateful for the partnership with City Sprouts as they go above and beyond to support the Food Bank’s mission. #FoodBankHeartland

We want to give a big THANK YOU to Tyson Foods and Cargill for their generous donations to improve the Food Bank’s capacity for repackaging bulk donations of protein in our new facility! Our new Protein Repack Room will be 4,300 square feet—a 614% increase from our current space. Not only will it provide us with more space to better serve neighbors, but it will also deliver potential opportunities to be a regional protein partner, providing this service to other food banks. Food Bank for the Heartland is one of nine Food Banks—across Feeding America’s Network of 200—to have a Protein Repack Room. We are two months into the construction phase at our new facility! Our project partner, Darland Construction Co. has made great headway in clearing the lot to begin building! We are extremely excited about the progress that has been made. This new facility will enhance our ability to serve our neighbors in 93 counties across Nebraska and western Iowa. We want to recognize the Cozad Haymaker Grand Generation Center—one of the Food Bank’s hunger relief partners—who recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special fundraiser. The event raised $10,000, which they graciously donated to the Food Bank. Thank you for helping the community of Cozad access healthy food and working with us to alleviate hunger. #FoodBankHeartland

The Food Bank is always looking for new and creative solutions to enhance the variety of food we distribute, and to provide a positive experience for anyone needing food assistance. Over the last several months, our Sourcing team has worked closely with teachers and educators involved in the Food Bank’s BackPack Program. After hearing their feedback, we are excited to offer more variety and name-brand items that children will recognize and enjoy this school year. 1 in 5 children in our 93-county service area is facing hunger, and the BackPack Program helps provide nutritious food to roughly 8,700 children every weekend throughout the school year. This program would not exist without the support of our generous donors. This week, the Food Bank received Father Wayne’s annual corn donation weighing in at more than 13,000 pounds. This will help provide nearly 11,000 meals for neighbors across Nebraska and western Iowa. The corn is scheduled to be distributed to several mobile and brick and mortar pantries across the Food Bank's service area. The first distribution will take place at a mobile pantry this Saturday in Hall County. Father Wayne has been donating fresh corn to the Food Bank for more than thirty years and has donated nearly 90,000 lbs. of corn over the last five years! Thanks to your A-MAIZE-ING work, our neighbors will have more access to healthy food! #FoodBankHeartland

Last week, members of Feeding America and the Food Bank had the opportunity to tour the Omaha Steaks facility. The tour showcased their meat processing and packaging rooms and highlighted their commitment to food safety and consistency. The Food Bank has also seen Omaha Steaks’ dedication to the fight against hunger first-hand. They donated more than 80,000 pounds of protein last year for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. We are grateful for their continued partnership to help eliminate hunger in our communities. Together, we are spreading dignity and hope throughout the Heartland. #FoodBankHeartland
