The terms ALLY, ADVOCATE and SPONSOR all have different meanings within the context of diversity and inclusion. According to Britannica and Merriam-Webster: Ally:  A person who supports and stands up for the rights of people from underrepresented groups. Advocate:  A person who speaks up for and supports the work of colleagues from underrepresented groups in all contexts. Sponsor:  A person who actively advocates for the sponsee, promoting their skills and potential to others, resulting in career development for the sponsee. ✋🏽 As women, we are grateful for allies. ✋🏾 We are thankful for advocates. ✋🏿 We desperately need more leaders practicing sponsorship. A sponsor is a person who has power and will use it for you. Sponsorship is a kind of helping relationship in which senior, powerful people use their personal clout to “talk up”, advocate for, and place a more junior person in a key role. (HBR) It’s about empowerment and creating space at the table for someone, advocating for her and giving her the opportunities, encouragement and feedback, she needs to help her succeed.
