Friends of the Urban Forest bring neighbors together to plant and care for street trees and sidewalk gardens in San Francisco. We are committed to growing San Francisco’s urban forest, building community, and taking a local leadership role in climate solutions through the simple act of planting trees and gardens. Since 1981, we have planted about 60,000 trees, totaling about half of San Francisco's street trees.

Share this with your favorite nature-loving Virgo (born Aug. 23-Sept. 22)! We chose the Victorian Box for the sign of Virgo because Virgos are logical, practical, and systematic in their approach to life. The Victorian Box boasts a symmetrical and well-structured appearance, requiring minimal pruning. This evergreen tree offers a dense foliage, which resonates with Virgo's need for quiet introspection in a peaceful environment. Help us plant and care for more trees like this lovely Victorian Box 🌳. Volunteer this fall! Link in comments for more info. Image descriptions: 1 Drawing of a Victorian Box. Text says Virgo. • We depend on volunteers to help us green San Francisco, including awesome volunteers from corporate partners like AstraZeneca, LAZ Parking, and Moody's! We want to say a huge thank you to this wonderful group of volunteers from all three companies. They came together on June 13th and 14th in Noe Valley to install 500 square feet of new sidewalk gardens. The project was generously supported with help from AstraZeneca, LAZ Parking, and Moody's. We also want to say a big thank you to Give To Get for supporting this important work and for helping to coordinate an awesome day! The Public Works Street Tree Nursery, which opened last fall in the South of Market neighborhood, already is putting down roots in the community. In collaboration with nonprofit partner, Friends of the Urban Forest, the New Roots workforce development program provides community members with apprenticeship opportunities in street tree stewardship. Four participants from San Francisco’s disadvantaged neighborhoods have completed the program and this month the latest cohort began work at the nursery. The program, which launched last December, offers young adults, 18 to 26 years old, training and hands-on work experience in nursery operations, tree planting and tree care. The program curriculum includes introductory botany and ecology courses, resume workshops, career counseling and communication training. The program also works with the YWCA and the Bill Sorro Housing Program, a local affordable housing advocacy group, to offer financial literacy training and affordable housing assistance workshops to help meet participants’ needs. The trees and plants cultivated at the nursery will in turn be used to continue greening San Francisco neighborhoods. New Roots is funded by the California Natural Resources Agency, the state Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the City and County of San Francisco through a Cal Fire grant. Participants earn $19.95 an hour. The introduction of the New Roots program coincided with the opening of the Street Tree Nursery. Developed on a 14,000-square-foot plot of underutilized Caltrans land, the nursery is situated underneath the I-80 freeway, off of Fifth Street, between Harrison and Bryant streets. One recent afternoon, the four newest participants were out weeding, removing green waste and pruning in the nursery garden. They’ve been studying nursery essentials, such as proper plant feeding and soil mixtures, cataloging nursery plant and tool inventories and keeping pests and contaminants out of the nursery environment. Public Works Director Carla Short, a trained arborist, said she is pleased to see New Roots participants gain practical skills they may one day be able to apply to full-time positions in the public and nonprofit sectors. “The New Roots program is an example of Public Works’ commitment to grow a strong workforce,” Short said. “These young people are poised to be the next generation of leaders in green science and technology, infrastructure, as well as planning and design of open spaces. “Our gardeners and public service aides,” she added, “have mentored them, along with Friends of the Urban Forest’s leadership, in gaining practical skills that will benefit them in their education and career endeavors.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gQk-sfdA California Natural Resources Agency #SFPublicWorks #LoveOurCity #Sustainability #Environment #Trees #WorkforceDevelopment #Career #Work #Nature #SanFrancisco

  • Did you know that when you plant trees, you are a land 🌳 AND an ocean 🌊 steward? Deforestation and burning fossil fuels cause excessive amounts of carbon dioxide to be released into the atmosphere. The excess CO2 affects things that can negatively impact marine mammals and humans (e.g. sea level rise, food supply, habitat loss). 🌳 Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 🌳 Trees release oxygen 🌳 Tree stabilize water runoff (which prevents harmful algae blooms that can hurt marine ecosystems) We’re all connected — Trees, marine mammals, and humans💚 Last week’s collaboration between Friends of the Urban Forest and The Marine Mammal Center at the Bayview tree planting  (9 of their summer interns volunteered) was the inspiration for this image. Image description Graphic shows the interconnectedness of trees, marine mammals, and humans. The text contains information similar to the post’s text. A body of water runs through the middle. • Have you ever wondered where the trees we plant come from? Well, here’s your answer! We source our trees from qualified wholesale nurseries throughout California to ensure we have high quality planting stock with diverse species availability. And once we receive the trees from the nurseries, we give them lots of TLC before we plant them💚. 🌳 We always try to minimize the time the trees spend in the tree yard, and try to give them a luxurious, pampered experience during their stay. This includes securing them to a stake so they don't fall over, maintaining adequate spacing between trees so they get enough sun🌞, and regular irrigation 🚿 to ensure they get the water they need. 🌳 Trees that are particularly undersized or stressed from transport may stay in our yard for longer in order to grow more or to recover. We always try to plant the highest quality stock to get the best outcomes. If you’d like to volunteer to plant and care for these happy young trees, go to the link in the comments for more information and to sign up. Big thanks to all of the Bayview tree planting volunteers who came out Saturday! This amazing group included 17 community volunteers, 10 Planting Leaders (volunteers who lead volunteer groups during plantings) and 9 high school students from The Marine Mammal Center's summer intern program. The Marine Mammal Center’s summer interns were awesome! They had a table with info about the connection between trees and the ocean and about how climate resilience is bolstered by urban forests. They even had a sea lion’s skull! We’ll be sharing more about the connection between trees 🌳 and the ocean  🌊 soon. Thirty five trees were planted including an interesting California native oak called Interior Live Oak (Quercus wislizeni) as well as some 'Pink Dawn' Chitalpa (Chitalpa tashkentensis). Other species planted were Chinese Pistache (Pistacia chinensis), Jacaranda, Cassia, Tristania, Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora), African Fern Pine (Podocarpus gracilor), Tilia, and more. They came from every continent except Antarctica! 🌳 If you’d like to become a Planting Leader, we’re having a Planting Leader Training Workshop on Aug. 13, 6-8:30 PM. Check out the link in the comments for more info and to register. #climatechange #nonprofit #climateaction #green #volunteer #greytogreen #arboriculture

Standing tall and proud, it captivates with its awe-inspiring stature and commanding presence. Like Leos, the Giant Sequoias demand attention and admiration, exuding a grandeur that draws us closer. Looking for a meaningful way to celebrate your Leo birthday? We have 7 volunteer opportunities (tree planting, tree care, and sidewalk gardening) coming up during Leo season.
