Does your career define you? According to a recent Pew study, only four out of ten people (who are not self-employed) consider their career very important to their overall identity. Over a quarter say it’s not important at all. As a recruiter for 28+ years, my focus is on helping people find the work that will be meaningful and satisfying to them. So it’s somewhat surprising to me to hear that work itself is not actually a huge component of happiness and self-identify. On the other hand, perhaps work should NOT define us, but simply be one satisfying component in a well-rounded life. Also, for what it’s worth, when you dig into the Pew numbers a little deeper, you’ll find that workers with higher incomes tend to be more tied to the identity that comes from work. And more than half of those with postgraduate degrees find central meaning and identity from their careers. If you have to quantify how important your work is to your own identity, how would you put it?
