Shout out to George Mason University - School of Theater Director Djola Branner for his work and involvement in the Theatrical Jazz Conference hosted by the Pillsbury House Theatre! The conference celebrated and extended the legacy of groundbreaking #artists Laurie Carlos, Sekou Sundiata, Ntozake Shange, and numerous others who revolutionized the #Americantheater by invoking elements of classic jazz––such as call-and-response, polyphony, syncopation, and improvisation––as theatrical language. Not only was Djola a presenter, he was also involved in the coordination and execution of the conference which featured workshops, roundtable discussions, staged readings, performances, and more! Bravo and congratulations for this incredible event! ➡️ To learn more about the conference, visit, https://lnkd.in/eivMD3g6 #gmu #georgemasonuniversity #georgemason #CVPA #theatre #theatricaljazz #masonarts #masonnation #theater #schooloftheater

We are so incredibly proud of our #MasonGrads for their incredible achievements, we can't wait to see where your journey takes you as #MasonAlumni 💚💛
I am thrilled to share that I have graduated Magna cum laude from George Mason University with a B.F.A. in Theater, with a concentration in Performance and a minor in Social Justice and Human Rights! My time as a student in the George Mason University - College of Visual and Performing Arts (Mason Arts), George Mason University Honors College, and School of Integrative Studies has been truly transformative, and I could not be more thankful. When I began my college journey six years ago, I never would have imagined where I would be today. I certainly did not expect this part of my life to be quite so long, to have included a global pandemic, or to have come to a close at a different university than where it began. That being said, I would not change a thing about my experience. Through these six years, I have learned the true meaning of perseverance, hard work, and flexibility. Not only that, but I also learned the value of prioritizing rest and finding balance. As a student with disabilities, it was vital for me to find a balance between pushing myself to learn, work hard, and expand my horizons, and not putting so much pressure on myself that I could not stay safe or healthy. This meant that completing my degree took longer than is traditional, but it also meant that I could actually succeed academically and even enjoy my college experience. I am so grateful to the School of Theater, Integrative Studies, and Honors College professors who taught me so much and guided me on my academic journey, to my fellow student leaders who inspired and encouraged me during (and after) my time in George Mason Student Government, and to the members of UBU at George Mason University who trusted me as their Vice President this past semester. I am also thankful to the people I met during my first year of college at James Madison University, who helped me begin to learn about myself and who supported me even as my journey took me to a different school. I could not have reached this milestone without any of these people or my wonderful friends and family, so if you are a member of any of these groups: thank you! Image Description: Zoe, a white person with mid-length wavy-curly brown hair, sits on a brick bench and is smiling at the camera. She is wearing a white dress, a green graduation cap and gown, and gold-colored high heels. Her legs are crossed and her hands rest on her lap.
