A/B TESTING IS DEAD! THE AI REVOLUTION IS HERE! ...or at least that's what some blog posts and software vendors and LinkedIn pundits would tell you. Normally when you hear this rhetoric, the "pitch" - either explicitly, or under the hood - is to replace A/B tests with multi-armed bandit algorithms. Multi-armed bandits are more optimal, faster to realize gains, automated, machine learning... but how much of this is real promise vs. just hype? I sat down with Chetan Sharma and Sven Schmit to get to the bottom of this: down to specific, practical use cases where you should ditch randomized controlled trials for bandit algorithms, and where you should stick to the classics. When I talk to Chief Product Officers, they have two major complaints about experimentation programs: 1. "My teams are claiming their experiments have an aggregate impact that just isn't plausible" 2. "Teams aren't running strategic tests - they're just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks" Today, Eppo‎ is introducing Performance Scorecards that provide clear, executive-level views that answer: 1. What is an actual, reliable forecast of the impact our winning experiments have had? 2. Are teams running healthy, high-quality experiments (e.g. with defined hypotheses)? 3. Are teams running *enough* experiments to find impactful ideas? 4. How are individual teams measuring up against industry benchmarks? With this information, leaders can easily score and celebrate high-performing teams who consistently operate with quality and velocity, and identify exactly where underperforming teams can quickly improve.
