On Monday night, Girl Leadership's Sports Program Director, Dr. Jia Nettles, joined NJ/NY Gotham FC, Charter Oak Advisory, New Jersey Youth Soccer, and South Bronx United to kick off the #KeepHerInTheGame Initiative. On Monday night, Dr. Jia was on the field pre-game to help light the torch to start this amazing programing. As our Training and Engagement Associate Director Catherine Castillo Cruz said, "Jia, I'm in awe of the love and intention you are bringing to the work in sports." It's a historic moment in women's soccer, and yet the U.S. is failing to keep girls in the game. By age 14, girls drop out of sport at nearly 2x the rate of boys. As reigning National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) champions, we at Gotham FC are compelled to take action. Today, we're proud to announce the launch of an innovative, research-backed program, Keep Her in the Game! This first-of-its-kind soccer-based program offers curated resources, coach and parent workshops, and mentorship with Gotham FC players. Together with partners Charter Oak Advisory and Girls Leadership and in collaboration with New Jersey Youth Soccer and South Bronx United, Keep Her in the Game aims to reach 1,000 youth (ages 12-13) in NJ/NY in its first year, with a goal of 10,000 youth by the end of 2027. The Why We Lead study found schools were complex for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) youth: schools are vital sources of community support for AANHPI youth; and they also serve as arenas of bias and prejudice from peers and adults alike. Fortunately, the Girls Leadership Youth Research Council has provided a roadmap educators and policymakers can use to support and cultivate the leadership potential of AANHPI youth.
