    For our non-profit partners like DBG Detroit (Downtown Boxing Gym) Official — the biggest value add Handcar can bring to the table to support our in-depth strategy, is content that tells a story. The work DBG is doing for the youth of Detroit day in and day out inside their four walls is brilliant, impactful, and frankly, unheard of in the space. But how do you share that impact to an audience that spans donors, students, parents, and organizations? You roll up your sleeves, dig in, and tell stories that matter. Sometimes at a molecular level.     Earlier this year, the Handcar Lab was honored to come alongside our friends at Rumpl to ring in their 10th anniversary with an all-new brand platform: Made For Whatever Unfolds. A brand born of van life and enjoyed by adventure seekers everywhere, Rumpl exists to enrich the outdoor experience through versatile, high-performance comforts. The inventors of The Original Puffy Blanket and originators of the technical blanket category.   Marking the moment of a new era for the brand, our team was tasked with sifting through years of archival brand footage to craft a narrative 10 years in the making; on time and on budget and without any net new production to take place. Let's just say, we're pretty damn glad Rumpl had so many incredible filmmakers and photographers along the ride throughout the years.     An absolute pleasure to get to sit down and shoot the breeze with the fine fellows of the Rally Caps Podcast last week in Chicago. While Gene Yoon and I go back a few years, I hadn’t gotten to witness the magic of the space, or his comrades in Steven Schultz and Eric Floberg. The WORK coming out of their respective camps is actually insane, and getting to witness it firsthand in the physical manifestation of Creative Club Chicago was a dream. The time and the convo left me inspired to keep the dream alive back here in Detroit. Our work is just getting started and these chances to share in the journey is what it’s all about.     Playing the long game—it's what I live and breathe every day in business and in growing our agency. Not in the way of gaming relationships, but in the way of what’s going to happen will happen; the right people will come at the right time, and the best thing we can do in the meantime is ensure that every single duck is in a row (and operating with excellence) so that when they do come, we’ll be ready. It takes me back to one of my absolute favorite “long games” I ever got the chance to play. Way back in 2020, in the early aughts of Handcar, we were living and breathing everything Chaco social. Copywriting, graphic design, animation, video + photo production, strategic direction in the midst of a Covid world. We had it all in front of us. But the highest impact part was ALWAYS (and still remains) the Community Management. Getting a chance to read, respond, celebrate, support, and strategize around each and every Chaco DM (as 1/2 of our then-two-person team) was a crash course in building a brand that lasts, and building a brand that takes others along for the journey every step of the way. The stories I could tell from that time are endless, but the one that led to these photos is one of my favorites. On a random weekday, country music superstar Thomas Rhett drops into a Chaco story reply (celebrities stuck at home during Covid lockdown—they’re just like us) and tells us he’s been a fan since he was a teenager. I quickly and excitedly reply, letting him know how stoked we are that he’s a fan and how, after all these years, we can still be firmly planted on his feet both on the road and at home. Standard issue, but in that classic fun, irreverent Chaco brand voice. Fast forward another couple of weeks and he pops in again, replying to a story. This time, I jokingly respond we might as well just put a collab together. Knowing collaboration lines can take 1-2 years just to materialize and manufacture, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to gauge interest and pass it forward to our fine comrades at Chaco to do the rest. Turns out, he was VERY interested. So many of his core memories were around those sandals. Going to camp, meeting his wife, hiking, fishing with his kids—Chaco’s had been underfoot every step of the way. And there I was, just a year and some change later, shaking his hand as “the guy from the DM’s” and BTS Social Photographer on the pre-launch production for his very own line of Chaco sandals, helmed by Someoddpilot outside Nashville, TN. After a successful (sold out) launch, they went on to do another round with TR and his team in 2022 as well. Play the long game—you just never know where it’ll land, or who it’ll land with.
