Genetic hearing loss is responsible for up to 50% of all hearing loss cases, but there isn’t an FDA-approved drug or treatment for the condition. That could change soon, thanks to a bilateral gene therapy developed by investigators from Mass Eye and Ear (a member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system) and Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. Researchers found the novel therapy “restored hearing function in five children who were treated in both ears.” The children “also experienced better speech perception and gained the ability to localize and determine the position of sound.” Scientists say more work needs to be done to refine the therapy, but it has the potential to change the way genetic hearing loss is treated in the future. Scientists at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have discovered a new immunotherapy drug that’s more effective than other types of immunotherapy. The drug was developed using chains of proteins called polypeptides, which are better at slowing cancer cell growth, especially when paired with immune checkpoint inhibitors. The researchers say this discovery “broadens the repertoire in terms of drug design,” and may be a catalyst for developing better, more effective cancer treatments. Aspirin has been used for secondary prevention of heart disease for more than 40 years, but the over-the-counter painkiller could also be effective at preventing cancerous colon tumors. That’s according to new research published by scientists at the University Hospital of Padova in Italy. Specifically, the researchers found that patients with colorectal cancer who took aspirin daily had “a greater expression of a protein associated with identifying and destroying immune cells.” The researchers say these results indicate that altering aspirin could improve its absorption in the colon and make it more effective at fighting cancer cells.
