Having a 'ruff' day? This will make you smile. Meet our pet therapy dogs and handlers! They are valued members of the animal therapy program at HCA Florida Englewood Hospital. Facility, service and therapy dogs have touched countless lives and brought smiles to patients, their loved ones and our care teams. Hospital colleagues collected seven boxes of food and supplies for the Suncoast Humane Society who provides this service. These canine caregivers enjoyed a party with special toys, treats and bandanas supplied by Lifelink of Florida. The hospital announced a $500 donation to support the program as well. Long time handler, Mary Szydlowski, visits patients and colleagues with her labradoodle, Max. She said, "The thing that I find every time I come here is that the patients and their visitors say, "You made my day" and we watch the stress leave their face. They light up. It's remarkable." The Employee Advisory Group for HCA Florida Englewood Hospital is collecting supply for the organization On the Spot, an organization formed during the pandemic to provide first aid to the homeless. They travel to homeless camps, park benches, and food distribution centers to treat wounds of the homeless population. Now through August 30, we are collecting items most needed for the homeless population including first aid supplies, cases of water, toiletry kits (mostly male), canes, and twin sheets (fitted and flat), in new or like-new, freshly cleaned condition. Other helpful items include sunscreen, personal care supplies like soap, shampoo, clean towels, socks, toothpaste, toothbrushes and hand sanitizer. We are grateful for the time and energy our student volunteers provided to support our patients and colleagues over the summer. We had 18 students volunteering for a total of 100 hours weekly. Leaders from our HCA Florida Englewood Hospital administration team spent time shadowing colleagues from different departments for "A Walk in Your World." They took time listening, taking notes, and understanding each colleague's roles throughout the hospital. One patient was delighted to learn that the Chief Nursing Officer was the one answering her call bell. Andrea Truex went right to work adjusting the patient's IV pump. CEO Joe Rudisill and VP of Operations Jonathan Jefferson observed Tracy Stamm, a respiratory therapist, while she performed a breathing treatment and managed a vent for a patient. She said, "I think it's great that they can learn what we do on a daily basis." The ASU team immediately put Joe to work on a busy surgery day. He escorted patients from the lobby to the patient room and visited with family members. He said, "It's important for any leader to be with the frontline staff and understand their daily routines and struggles so we can help remove those barriers to make their work lives easier and improve patient experience." Meet Brewski, Pet Therapy Dog Brewski is one of the dogs that visits HCA Florida Englewood Hospital monthly to provide pet therapy to our colleagues and patients. The program is offered through the Suncoast Humane Society. These pet partners and their humans visit our hospital, schools and provide fun during reading programs at local libraries.
