This week's tip: Highlight the reciprocal nature of social connectedness. Strong social connectedness creates multi-way and rippling positive effects across people and communities. Initiatives to build and sustain social connections are ideally designed to ensure mutual benefits, rather than as a service model that focuses on one side or one group. For example, we can re-think intergenerational approaches focused on helping senior citizens toward co-generational models that positively impact all generations, and shift from a mindset on charity to highlight the benefits to all parties and the community at-large when helping friends and neighbors. This week's tip: Re-think whether community change is the goal. The term “community change” has been used to describe efforts and approaches to achieve sustainable healthy communities. We have used this term ourselves and are recently reflecting on its use. Depending on the context, the term can inadvertently imply that a community needs to be “fixed” or that it does not possess unique assets that are conducive to health and wellbeing that should be preserved and protected. With the use of the word “community transformation,” we strive to better encompass how existing and potential new efforts can co-exist and complement one another for impact. It is important to remain mindful of unintended implications of using a term and to use them within appropriate contexts.
