Happy 10-year anniversary to Citizen HKS! This program is an initiative dedicated to uplifting people through public interest design and community service. Fueled by the passion our teams have for taking local action and using their design skills to positively influence lives, Citizen HKS is a global change agent.     This week, we’re highlighting how Citizen HKS has partnered with schools and community organizations to foster education and play to improve development and well-being among children and teens. Design teams have contributed plans for StationSoccer’s in Atlanta to create youth soccer fields near underutilized land at transit stations and for The Park at Floral Farms in Dallas, which is designed to bring much needed recreation space so community members can play and enjoy the outdoors together.    During Citizen HKS’ annual Month of Service, teams in nearly every HKS office have partnered with the HKS K-12 Outreach Program on an annual book drive and mentorship programs to engage young people in learning about architecture and design. "At HKS, the project architect (PA) is the person who experiences the project from inception to completion. Considering the project variety in size, scope, materiality, and form, as well as the design talent at HKS, I contend there is no better place to learn and practice our craft as a PA," says Jason Henson AIA, LEED AP, EDAC. "Being a project architect here has made me a better equipped and more accomplished architect." As a Sr. Project Architect in our Fort Worth office, Jason is recognized as a leader and teacher.   ✨ HKS has project architect openings in offices across the firm. Interested in joining our team? Uplift Education was in need of a new campus to bridge personal and academic aspects of development while providing a welcoming, supportive atmosphere for all students. When designing the new Uplift Luna campus, HKS asked questions about how design can emphasize the academic journey — how design can promote outdoor social spaces and the health and wellness of students and staff — and more. The campus was looking to shift the focus away from the formal classroom and move toward a more holistic social and emotional development for its students. Teachers now have more learning spaces, including outdoor areas that allow for flexibility and creativity in their curriculum.  Read on to learn how Uplift Luna inspires and celebrates the educational journey. https://hks.onl/3TrF5r3 📍 Dallas, TX 📸 by Wade Griffith #education #design #architecture

Optus Stadium in Perth, Australia is home to both the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers of the Australian Rules Football League. HKS designers, in association with Cox Architecture and Hassell Studio, helped the client meet their goal in creating a multipurpose modern sports facility that also served as a destination for citizens and non-sporting events.    Alex Thomas, a designer on the project, shares how HKS helped to bring the venue to life. "The site was once a heavily contaminated dumping ground, neglected and unproductive. Our role was to reimagine the site as a destination and extension of the city," says Alex. "Stadiums are never just about the stadium; in the case of Optus, the site has become a wonderful parkland which engages the river's edge and is populated with a rich mix of facilities and event environments."   Learn more about how this venue was transformed. https://hks.onl/3TrdgiO #design #architecture

HKS' very own Meggie Meidlinger is a project architect in our Sports practice who designs world-class venues for athletes. But what takes her talent as a designer to the next level is that she is also a member of the Women's National Baseball team. She not only designs these spaces — she uses them too.   Meggie's recent work was with the renovation and upgrade to the University of Georgia's Foley Field baseball facility. She brought her own experiences to the project, helping to create a space that works for those athletes.   Read on to see how Meggie's two worlds cross paths. ⏩ sbjsbd.com/BbC2LTFt Sports Business Journal/Bret McCormick #sports #design #architecture

In a recent episode of The Key Podcast: Voices of Student Success, HKS' very own Renae Mantooth and Brad Robichaux discuss the science behind environmental wellness and how colleges are adapting to serve their students. This duo explains the importance behind intentional design to meet the needs of different people — how the built-environment is strongly connected to how people behave in a space and how people feel in a space.   ⏯ Listen to the full episode to learn more. https://hks.onl/4cRbiyX Inside Higher Ed/Ashley Mowreader #education #studentwellness #design #architecture

“Exponential ecology” was the given phrase when designing UC San Diego’s Theatre District Living and Learning Neighborhood. At every design decision, at every scale, the project embodied a connection to nature and place to promote human wellness and responsibility to the planet. The HKS design team led a series of stakeholder sessions to develop a project programing, employing primary and secondary research to address key outcomes to enhance the student experience. Learn how HKS designers created a welcoming environment to benefit the community, faculty/staff and student interactions. https://hks.onl/3ALk2te #studenthousing #desigin #architecture

The new El Paso VA Health Care Center celebrated its groundbreaking this week! The facility will be a 492,000-square-foot ambulatory care located on the William Beaumont Army Medical Center campus. HKS' Brent Willson, Anthony Montalto and Jim Whitaker, FAIA, FDBIA attended the milestone event alongside our partners on the project — Clark Construction Group, SmithGroup, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).   Brent Wilson, Studio Practice Leader for Federal Health, is helping to lead the work for HKS on this project and shares the impact it will have on veterans. “We not only wanted to create a place that honored and served the Veterans but also one that felt like it could only belong in this place and to serve the El Paso community,” says Brent. “We’re extremely proud of the result, especially knowing the facility will provide top-level care for our nation’s heroes.”   Read on about what's to come for the project. https://hks.onl/3z04gKn #design #architecture
