A HUGE THANK YOU to Norton Rose Fulbright for hosting an 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤 𝙩𝙤 𝙄𝙄𝙇𝙋 reception for the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession | IILP in the Legal Profession in your stunning Dallas offices! Our Chair, Bruce Byrd, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Palo Alto Networks, wanted an opportunity to tell friends and colleagues in Dallas about IILP and, in doing so, expand the circles of people who know about us and would appreciate the different DEI model that we represent and the impact of our work. It helped a lot that two members of our Advisory Board, Lysha Weston from AT&T and Alan Dorantes from T-Mobile were also able to join us and share why they find it worthwhile to devote their time and energy to working with IILP. And, we were thrilled to have the added stature of other DEI leaders like Kristin Bauer, the President of the National Association of Women Lawyers and Michael Massiatte, co-Chair of the Hispanic/Latino Resource Group at DLA Piper, join us. It proved to be a nice opportunity to engage in some atypical cocktail conversations about why the legal profession hasn’t had greater DEI success and how we should address it going forward. While one theme of our work has always been that IILP is different, it was gratifying to hear so many of our guests spontaneously reaching the same conclusion and their eagerness and willingness to hear (and do) more. Thanks to everyone who attended! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Brett C. Govett, Madison Armstrong, Gina Compton, CMP, Jeff Cody and Dwayne Lawton, Cassie Johnstone and Rosalinda Rodriguez who kindly helped us haul the leftover swag back to the car! We couldn’t be happier with how it all went! Looking forward to more collaborations with Norton Rose Fulbright. 1234 #iilp #theiilp #inclusion #DEI #inclusioninlaw #legalprofession #lawyers #legal #law #nortonrosefulbright #leadership

School’s back in session! The Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession | IILP’s award-winning -- we can say that now, thank you very much American Bar Association Standing Committee on Professionalism, Julia Roundtree Livingston, and Joseph Bruno -- law school class “𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆” with Loyola University Chicago School of Law is back with its largest enrollment yet! And this semester, much more of the class is being conducted in-person as opposed to the entirely virtual format used when we started the class in 2020 during the Pandemic! The class is being co-taught by IILP CEO Sandra Yamate and IILP Advisory Board Member Josie Gough and uses a lens of professionalism to explain DEI in the legal profession, address the challenges it is facing, explore the strategies to advance it, and empower law students to consider how they can continue to move DEI forward in the legal profession and beyond. No surprise that over the years, many of the guest speakers have described it as “the law school course they wish they’d had!” Session One featured welcoming remarks from Illinois Appellate Justice, Hon. Sanjay Tailor; Carla Madeleine Kupe, Esq. (She/Sie/Elle/Ella) the Chief Equity Officer for the City of Chicago; Tania Luma, Loyola’s assistant dean for the law school’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; and former class member Suet Lee, now an associate at Irvin IP LLP. Then work began with an overview of the current demographics of the legal profession and a discussion about language and terminology in DEI. We’re off to a great start and looking forward to a dynamic and thought-provoking semester! #lawschool #DEI #iilp #lawcourse #loyola #aba #theiilp #legalprofession #lawstudents #legal #inclusion #diversity #empower

𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨! A huge thank you to the 𝗔𝗕𝗔 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 and the 𝗘. 𝗦𝗺𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 for bestowing the 2024 E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award upon the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession | IILP and Loyola University Chicago School of Law for our class, “𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗔 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.” This class is a labor of love as we seek to educate law students to better understand why DEI is a critical component of professionalism; the barriers and obstacles to, the strategies for, and the achievements of DEI in the legal profession; and how they, as students and young lawyers, can be empowered to advance DEI in meaningful ways. As we prepare to embark upon the 4th year of offering this class, receiving this award has been a welcome validation that we’re not the only ones who believe in its mission. Thank you SO much to our CEO, Sandra Yamate, and Advisory Board Member Josie Gough, who take the laboring oar and teach the class, the administration and staff at Loyola, especially Dean Michèle Alexandre and all the lawyers who volunteer as guest speakers and advisors for our students. Thank you also to Stephanie Villinski from the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism and Joseph Bruno from the American Bar Association Center for Professional Responsibility; we at IILP look forward to future partnering with both of you! Thank you to Erika Harold for the lovely bouquets for Sandra and Josie and for serving as inspiration for greater professionalism in our profession. And thanks to the National Conference of Bar Presidents and Robin Wolpert for presenting the award during their Annual Meeting luncheon. Any opportunity to be part of something with NCBP is enjoyable! Lastly, as a point of personal privilege: All of us at IILP want to express our gratitude and admiration for the NAPABA Law Foundation members who took the time to not only show up at the awards luncheon but managed to keep their plans to attend A 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗧 and truly SURPRISE Sandra.
