The Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Stands with Credit Unions and State Banking Associations in the Lawsuit to Stop Implementation of the New Illinois Interchange Fee Prohibition Act Statement of Jaime di Paulo, President and CEO of the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (IHCC) on the filing of the lawsuit: CHICAGO, Friday, August 16, 2024–In the midst of what many news outlets characterized this week as the highest level of optimism among small business owners in several years, the State of Illinois is going ahead with a law that, if enacted, would throw the entrepreneurial spirit into turmoil. That is why the IHCC supports the lawsuit filed yesterday by our partners at the Illinois Credit Union League and state banking associations challenging the Illinois Interchange Fee Prohibition Act (IFPA), a law that has been criticized by the editorial boards of the Chicago Tribune and Crain’s Chicago Business. Ok For Latino small business owners across our state, over 145,000 and growing, enactment of the IFPA would throw the modern and efficient payment system into chaos and undermine the significant benefits that credit and debit cards provide to their consumers and businesses. The Act would present major challenges for our Latino businesses small and large – while providing a windfall to the largest retailers doing business in Illinois. As job growth continues throughout our state along with record numbers of new Latino small business owners, now is not the time to set our economy back with policies that make it more difficult, not easier, to run a business.  #  #  #
