On June 19, 1865, General Order No. 3, a decree enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all remaining slaves in the state of Texas following the Civil War, was issued by Union General Gordon Granger. Over a century and a half later, #Juneteenth is now recognized annually as a federal holiday. It is a day for reflecting on hard historical truths, commemorating the paths paved by previous generations, celebrating Black joy and courage, and acknowledging the ongoing battle for justice and equality. As Oakland families head to graduations and teachers wrap up the last few weeks of school here in Oakland, CA, we're reflecting on this work with the Kenneth Rainin Foundation. We're inspired by the Foundation team's deep commitment to listening and learning from schools and their communities as they assess and enhance their grantmaking strategies. And we're especially grateful for the teachers, principals, literacy coaches, and literacy tutors working hard for Oakland's kids every day.
We engaged Informing Change to assess our early literacy strategies and evaluate our Education grantmaking’s impact on our goal of all Oakland children reading at or above grade level by third grade. So excited to be launching our next cohort of Working Towards Racial Equity with Laura Rodriguez, Justice Outside, and Informing Change. We're looking for environmental and outdoor science organizations (including those dedicated to outdoor learning, environmental justice, environmental science, environmental literacy, youth development, and community development) who are ready to make a big commitment to racial equity, and want to do so in the company of a national network of folks with the big goals in mind. The application for the next cohort of the Working Towards Racial Equity (WTRE) Series is now open! What is WTRE? 👇 The Lawrence Hall of Science and Justice Outside launched the Working Towards Racial Equity workshop series in 2018 and are officially ready to invite a new cohort of organizations to participate! This series and associated research study supports environmental and outdoor science organizations (including those dedicated to outdoor learning, #environmentaljustice, #environmentalscience, #environmentalliteracy, youth development, and community development) to build capacity to foster equitable, inclusive, and culturally relevant work environments and organizations. It centers #racialequity in its approach because we recognize that racism is at the heart of inequity in the environmental field and in the United States, broadly. We are accepting applications for 5 mid-sized outdoor science organizations (~20-75 staff) to learn with us. The project will kick off with an in-person convening in February of 2025, and activities (in-person and virtual) will continue through to early 2028. What are you waiting for?! Our summative evaluation (https://lnkd.in/ghVTdWNS) was one of many projects commissioned by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation for the conclusion of its $160 million-plus, decade-long #Cyber Intiative:
Our Cyber Initiative spent the last decade supporting the development of a more robust cyber policy field. In that time, the initiative supported more than 100 grantee partners with over $160 million in charitable contributions. We knew we weren’t going to “solve” cyber challenges in just ten years, but we’ve seen tremendous growth in a field that can continue to thrive, offering new solutions to society’s most pressing cyber challenges. We are so grateful to all of our grantees and partners for all of their efforts to keep individuals and societies around the world safe online. Our Cyber team shares their own reflections, and we commissioned several external projects to better understand our impact and what we’ve learned.

In the spring of 2023, Informing Change engaged California parents and caregivers through a series of focus groups for our Oakland neighbor Children Now, a non-partisan research and advocacy organization. Children Now has published a brief, "Big Feelings: Parents and Caregivers Need More Help to Support Children Under 5," documenting their findings from these discussions, which centered on parent and caregiver experiences and ideas on how the state could best support early childhood social-emotional development and mental health: https://lnkd.in/g3daGTjJ
