Minorities remain underrepresented in STEM occupations. Black communities represent 11% of all jobs and 9% of STEM jobs. Hispanic communities represent 17% of all jobs and only 8% of STEM jobs. "I am the first Black woman to pilot a spaceship, and I don't want to be the last." Less than 3% of airline pilots are Black, and less than 1% are women. Astronaut Dr. Sian Proctor was the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft in 2021, a hundred years after Bessie Coleman opened aviation for women of color by getting her pilot's license. Did You Know? The US placed 34th out of 80 countries in math and 16th in science on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) (OECD, 2022). Despite the need for more and better STEM education, teachers lack the necessary resources, both financial and experiential, to successfully achieve those results. With our Outreach Programs, JERSEYSTEM works with schools and organizations to create after-school STEM Club programs for middle school girls in low-income, underrepresented communities. According to the 2024 GEM Gender Report, women make up 35% of STEM graduates, which is the same percentage as 10 years ago. However, only 15% of young women graduate from STEM programs compared to 35% of young men. There is work to be done.
