    📣 News from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)! 🎉 The FTC has announced a new rule that is intended to strengthen consumer trust and promote fair business practices. This rule targets fake reviews and testimonials, making it illegal for businesses to create, sell, or buy them. This includes AI-generated fake reviews and testimonials that misrepresent a person’s experience with a product or service. Why is this important? 🤔 Fake reviews not only mislead consumers, but they also harm honest businesses by diverting customers away. By combating deceptive advertising, this rule is intended to protect consumers and promote a marketplace that is fair, honest, and competitive. What does this mean for businesses? 🏢 Businesses are now prohibited from: -Creating or selling fake reviews or testimonials. -Buying positive or negative reviews. -Writing reviews that fail to disclose the reviewer’s connection to the business. -Misrepresenting that a website provides independent reviews. -Using threats or false accusations to prevent or remove a negative review. -Selling or buying fake indicators of social media influence. This rule will become effective 60 days after it’s published in the Federal Register (expected Oct. 2024). Violators will face civil penalties ($50k+ a pop), strengthening the FTC’s enforcement actions.
