In combat, every second counts. Imagine a 25-year-old service member injured by small arms fire, 70 minutes from the nearest hospital. How do you respond at point of injury? Is applying a tourniquet “high and tight” always the right move? During #MHSRS2024, these critical questions were at the forefront of a discussion by combat casualty care experts. Drawing from real cases from the Joint Trauma System (JTS) DoD Center of Excellence for Trauma, these discussions highlight the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge in advancing trauma care.

Combat Casualty Care Conference: Overview of Altitude Emergencies in the Prehospital Environment Earlier this year, JTS published a new clinical practice guideline focused on prevention and handling of altitude emergencies in the prehospital environment. Focus areas include symptom surveillance, complications, treatment, and the impact on pre-existing conditions. On Thursday, August 29, HMCS Wayne Papalski, will provide an overview. JTS announces the publication of the En Route Care (ERC) Patient Packaging Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG). The prompt movement of patients to the required level of clinical care is essential to prevent morbidity and mortality. The ERC Patient Packaging CPG is a must-read resource for those responsible for preparing patients for en route care and evacuation to ensure the safe transport of casualties to definitive care. The ERC CPG addresses the requirements defined in Joint Publication (JP) 1-02, Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms and JP 4-02 for transitory medical care, patient holding, and staging capabilities from the point of injury or onset of disease throughout the continuum of care.   JTS Link: https://lnkd.in/gZ9ZRk6Y Deployed Medicine Link: https://lnkd.in/gRjb59j8

The CBRN Injury Response Part 3: Medical Management of Radiation Exposure and Nuclear Events Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) provides guidance for the recognition, decontamination, treatment, and triage of suspected or confirmed irradiated and/or contaminated patients who are exposed to radiation. INDOPACOM Trauma Care Conference Series: DoD Global Health Engagement, Knowledge Management, and the Medical Preparation of the Operational Environment    Now more than ever, interoperability and collaboration with our Allies and Partners are necessary in developing interoperability to enhance our mutual readiness. Combat Casualty Care Conference: Patient Case Reviews of Gunshot Wounds Two cases involving gunshot wounds will be presented. One case will focus on a GSW to the leg with compartment syndrome and fasciotomy, while the other case is a GSW to the neck.
