Mentoring teen boys on their journey to becoming self-aware & emotionally intelligent men of integrity

Über uns

Operating in Raleigh and Asheville, NC since 2009, Journeymen supports adolescent males (ages 12-18) in their transformation to becoming men of integrity. We teach emotional literacy, provide leadership development and opportunities for community service through group mentoring and weekend adventure programs. We recruit and train male volunteers who model authentic masculinity and support self-awareness and emotional growth in boys while honoring their youthful energy. We support and empower boys through three programmatic activities: group mentoring circles, one-on-one mentoring, and weekend adventure programs.

We are Forging Independence, Resiliency, and Emotional maturity in young men! You don’t become a man by getting older. It requires answering the call to adventure, picking up your burden, and facing your pain. A conscious man is one who says YES and chooses the path of maturity. Once he does, mentors come alongside to support him. In our day and age, so many young men do not have a village or a community of mentors to support them in their process of becoming adults. Boys go without formal rites of passage and find other, unhealthy, ways to initiate themselves. Now more than ever, we need good men to show up for the next generation by calling them into their journey to conscious manhood. Our mentors model and call out this maturity. They do so by providing masculine nurture and masculine challenge. The 34 boys at Mount Vernon Middle school are already getting this. They are discovering the 🔥 that they have within themselves and are learning how to better tend to it. #journeymentriangle #mentoring #community #youth #relationships #mentalhealth #youthdevelopment #Integrity #menswork #healthyrelationships #healthymasculinity

A good mentor will meet a young man right where he is AND simultaneously call him to a higher level of maturity. This was top of mind for us as we started a new partnership with Mt. Vernon Middle School this spring. 34 middle school boys are now being supported monthly with our Journeymen club this spring - a space for building resiliency through group mentoring, leadership development, and sharing vulnerably in circle with other boys and men. The mentors above are fantastic at providing both masculine empathy AND masculine challenge. We need good men to show up and support this next generation of young men here in the Triangle! Are you ready to give back to your community? Comment or DM us here. We're also excited to explore bringing the Journeymen club to more middle and high schools in Wake County this 2024-2025 school year. Message us to make a connection or suggestion. #journeymentriangle #mentoring #community #youth #relationships #mentalhealth #youthdevelopment #Integrity #menswork #healthyrelationships #healthymasculinity

On April 17th, our group had the opportunity to have a second session with the 7th and 8th-grade boys at Mt. Vernon Middle School. During our time together, we focused on the concept of "Masking," which involves suppressing or hiding one's behaviors or traits to appear a certain way. Emotional masking, specifically, refers to hiding or holding back how one truly feels and presenting a different emotional state to the outside world. We discussed the various forms of masking, such as suppressing negative emotions or faking positive ones, and how they can impact our lives. Some common consequences of masking include; 1. Disconnection from our authentic selves 2. Emotional exhaustion, 3. Burnout 4. Hindered development of genuine relationships 5. Negative impacts on mental and physical health. Our session was spent sharing stories about the masks we all wear as adults and how they prevent us from becoming closer to others. We believe that by allowing ourselves to be more vulnerable, we can create more genuine connections with those around us. So, we leave you with a question: "What mask do you wear that you wish others would see?" Let's start a conversation about the importance of being true to ourselves and the impact it can have on our relationships and overall well-being. #NetApp #S3Academy #Data #Mentor #givehope #emotionalMask #blessed #raleighcommunity

CURRENTLY ENROLLING: *Nov 10-12* Journeymen's Fall Rites of Passage Adventure Weekend (ROPAW) near Pittsboro, NC. Do you know a young man who is ready to embark on their hero's journey? This is a powerful weekend for young men to explore who they are and what kind of men they want to become. This transformational weekend experience is followed-up by at least 1 year of mentoring in our community group mentoring circles (or J-groups). Many young men stay involved for 3+ years and come back as young mentors. If you have a referral please reach out to Jordan ([email protected]) so we can set up an intake call with the parents and the young man to see if our weekend experience is a good fit. We are capping this weekend at 20 young men: first come, first serve. At these weekends, young men are challenged to draw on their inner resources, discover new strengths, and let go of what no longer serves them so they can become the men they want to be. These weekends are supported by a dedicated community of 30+ mentors and young mentors (Jmen). Our ROPAW is modeled on global rites of passage traditions, infusing freedom and personal responsibility— qualities vital to community and individual wellness for millennia. The phrase "toxic masculinity" has dominated headlines for years. We are constantly berated by a 24/7 news cycle showing us the "bad guys." When boys do not learn to become good men, when they do not have role models, challenge and nurture from other men, we see downstream affects like gun violence, self-harm, or radicalization. While the news cycle focuses on this, we are busy working upstream and developing and empowering healthy masculinity in our region. The boys we serve are not bad guys, they are not toxic, and they are not powerless to the situation or life circumstances they find themselves in. They are normal young men, and like all of us, they need support from the wider community. I hear from so many people that they feel powerless in the face of huge & systemic problems like the ones facing boys and men currently. If you'd like to be a part of the change - we invite you to join us - to support a positive and healthy vision of masculinity with other men and women and young people in our Journeymen community. On 9/17 you'd be joining other changemakers and mentors who are quietly and humbly working to disrupt the constant stream of news stories associated with toxic masculinity, gun violence, mental health crisis, etc. Join us in telling a different story, one of change of hope. https://lnkd.in/gi9F9pZv If you are an educator or mental health provider, thank you for your service! The food, drinks, and evening activities are on us next Sunday evening (promo codes: EDUCATOR or THERAPIST) Can't make it on the 9/17? Consider donating directly to our cause so that we can partner with more schools this fall and next spring: https://lnkd.in/gi9F9pZv #youthdevelopment #mentoring #ritesofpassage #mascuilinty #toxicmasculinity #gunviolence #gunviolenceprevention #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthprofessionals #education #educators #fatherhood #fatherhoodmatters #communityevent
