The #Hungarian #language is part of the Finno-Ugric group within the Uralic language family. It is primarily spoken in Hungary, with significant communities in Slovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia, as well as smaller groups scattered worldwide. Hungarian is closely related to the Ob-Ugric languages, Mansi and Khanty, spoken in western Siberia. Hungarian has been written in a modified Latin alphabet since the 13th century, with its orthography stabilized in the 16th century with the advent of printing. While Hungarian has borrowed words from languages like Iranian, Turkic, Caucasian, Slavic, Latin, and German, its phonology and grammar remain characteristically Uralic. 'Sushi' Or 'Susi'? #Japan to Rethink Longstanding Romanization Rules -- "There are two broadly accepted ways to write rōmaji, the romanization of Japanese characters in the 26-letter alphabet. One is the Kunrei system, established under a cabinet ordinance in 1937, and the second is the Hepburn system, named after US missionary James Curtis Hepburn, who came to Japan in the nineteenth century and popularized its usage. With the number of visitors to Japan and foreigners living in the country increasing, a council under the Agency for Cultural Affairs has begun deliberations to unify the different writing systems with weight placed on the Hepburn system, which is in more widespread use." 25 Most Spoken #Languages in the World -- Of the 297 living languages spoken in China, Mandarin #Chinese stands out with 1.3 billion speakers, making it the second most spoken language globally. By comparison, Wu, the second most prevalent language in China, ranks 21st with 80 million speakers. Yue Chinese comes in 25th place with 72 million speakers. #Languages Spoken at Home by Fairfax County Elementary Students --"Within Fairfax County there are a total of 161 different languages or dialects spoken in the homes of elementary school students during 2022-2023 school year. The data visualized represents the information obtained from the Home #Language Survey which is included in the school enrollment forms bundle. Kenneth Katzner's 'Languages of the World' was used to determine language groups for various dialects. The World Atlas of Language Structures and Glottolog were also used to further help in assigning languages to the proper group as well as determine which regions of the world languages are spoken." The #Russian #Language Day is celebrated on 6 June – the birthday of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. "This Day was set by the decision of the UN Department of Public Information in 2010.
