Über uns

The KeelWorks Foundation is a 501(c)(3) approved nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting upward mobility for everyone, but especially the economically disadvantaged. We support personal empowerment through peer supported leadership development, goal management, and mutual accountability. Our change model is based on the idea that together, we can do anything. Diversity, inclusiveness, emotional intelligence, and the power of community intelligence. Our program is under development, but even now we are supporting change through our intern program. Every program project is driven by students with education, but without the experience to qualify as a credible career candidate. We have coached hundreds of students and graduates in career skill application, coached resume development, and helped hundreds to meaningful employment. Since 2008, the foundation has operated with less than $1500 total funds. Expenses are paid by volunteers and corporate support. We benefit from software and systems support for systems and training development tools.

Resume Guidance For those who are not part of the KeelWorks foundation, I am offering a session on how to fix your resume. There are several strategies that are the result of bad advice that gut resume effectiveness. I'll talk about how to design a resume to meet the use needs and your own needs. A list of advice commonly applied that undermines resume effectiveness includes the following. - Putting your education first. - Putting your skills last and in paragraph form. - Including your GPA. - Offering statistics showing effect. The session will explain what you should and shouldn't do on a resume and why. Employers are used to terrible resumes, so you will blow them away if you can be that exception. The first session is $25 and will occur on Thursday, September 12th at 5:00 pm, PDT. I will have follow-up sessions for reviewing revisions - those will be $10 each. Good resumes take time and iterations. Anyone interested should email me at [email protected]. If people would repost this to other groups, I would appreciate it.

Marketing/Sales/Lead Generation The foundation needs help for grant acquisition. This role needs someone with writing skills but also a head for sales. Our process involves talking to grant giving organizations and building the grant proposal. We will want someone who has some experience writing for sales or who can demonstrate the necessary skills. This person also needs to be able to research for grantors and to be able to find the right person at these organizations to open a dialogue.

HR Lead We need someone to take on leadership of the Foundation's HR department. There are about 15 members of this department. Some are assigned to onboarding, some develop policy and procedure, some are guiding others. The person in this position should have a degree in human resources and they should have some experience in the field. The ideal person has enough education and experience to warrant the role, but lacks the leadership experience. The incumbent will develop that experience here and parlay that into an HR lead role elsewhere. The time requirement is eight to ten hours a week, spread through the week (not all on a weekend).

Project Management: we are looking for experienced project managers who need to build a track record for employment. It is not important to me that a person be experienced in the type of project, only that they can ask questions, leverage the team to fill in gaps, drive timelines, and document progress on Gantt charts or something similar. Some projects are application design, others are for marketing, or research.

I will be posting alerts here when we need more interns. Right now, the one unmet need is for people with brand strategy development experience. Once we have someone who can lead that, we'll add people to support all the different aspects of a brand strategy, such as Logo, color scheme, and standard formats.

Resumes I am sorry to say that most of you looking for work are listenting to the wrong people. You are putting your education at the top of your resume, you are listing every skill you ever brushed up against, you are proudly sharing your GPA, some are still using their school email (perhaps because they think employers will be impressed?). Some are adding to their LinkedIN profile, "Actively seeking full-time employment." Stop listening without a filter. A good resume understands the reader's needs. It knows that the hiring manager wants someone who wants this job, not just any job. Resumes are trying to meet three or four opportunities; I get the you are willing to work in a variety of ways, but the hiring manager wants someone focused on THIS job - only this job. Your resume needs make your focus clear and singular. You can have five resumes, but only one for one job. As a student, you are an untried and untested commodity. Your education is important - it means you are ready to learn. Employers see that as icing on the cake. The cake is those skills and competencies, those are what they will hire. Putting your education first is an acknowledgement that your shelf is bare - at least in your mind, and if you think that, they should believe you. I have owned and managed many businesses and I've worked at Boeing, Intel, Microsoft, AT&T, IBM, GE Digital, Humana, Nike and others. I'm a writer, and a business consultant. I know resumes and those who follow my advice get jobs. I will be hosting a course on resumes once I have a quorum. The cost is exorbitant ($25 for the first session). I'll have resume review sessions for $10. If interested, please send your $25 to PayPal at [email protected]. This fee will go to me, which is nice, since I work all week, and for the past 16 years, I've done it without pay. If you sign up for this course and feel the course fails to offer value, just ask, and I will refund your fee.

Volunteering at KeelWorks We have had so many volunteers come through KeelWorks this year, and we have close to a dozen major software project in the final phases of development. Now we have many more than we need, though people get employed and leave every day, so hopefully we'll clear out the back log soon. We have so many data analysts that I have tried to place them in other roles. That has not worked out well. I have encourage them to look for data opportunities while pursuing those other duties, but none, that I can think of have proposed projects. Some have found ways to use their expetize out side of their initial expectation and been very valuable. More have sat idle waiting for assignment. This has spread to developers, so we've stopped bringing on volunteers unless there is a clear need. We'll also be more stringent on who we accept. We'll test competencies. In the past, we posted opportunities on VolunteerMatch.com, and we'll continue to do that, but we'll also post them here. I'm telling those I turn away to come here. This way they'll be at the head of the line for opportunities.

    More people. More impact.
