NorthStar Earth & Space, Inc., a startup space situational awareness data provider, is asking for a court injunction to stop Spire Global, the builder/operator of the satellite's providing NorthStar's service, from shutting off the flow of data. The two companies have a “space-as-a-service” contract. With critical satellite features and unmet service levels, NorthStar is pushing for legal action to safeguard its operations. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for both companies and the future of their partnership. DIFI Consortium’s new working group on standards for Electronically Steered Antenna (ESA) interoperability is making significant progress. ESA’s are critically important for reaching maximum value for multi-orbit, multi-mission support. The existing monitor and control (M&C) standards were created for a modem controlling a relatively dumb, single-purpose parabolic antenna, which means that more intelligent, multi-purpose phased array antennas are forced to operate as if they were poorly performing parabolics. DIFI’s working group is focused on augmenting AMIP and BMIP to better mesh M&C with the advanced features and capabilities of ESAs. With the backing of 35 engaged member organizations, including the U.S. Army, the push to make ESA mainstream is making significant strides.
