Meet authors Dr. Hal Higdon, Jason Hainline, and Paul Harney of "Designing an Advanced Manufacturing Training Center". Today’s skilled manufacturing industries are powered by creative and intelligent employees who must solve problems, operate high-tech equipment, and collaborate with their peers. To help more workers qualify for these rewarding jobs, high schools, and community colleges require facilities that can support hands-on training as well as classroom education. The Robert W. Plaster Center for Advanced Manufacturing at Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) opened in August 2022 in Springfield, Missouri, to help fill this need. With the help of Dake Wells Architecture and Perkins&Will, they transformed a parking lot into a highly visible, well-utilized resource for students, area businesses, and the wider community. Meet authors James O'Connor and Crystal Ball O'Connor of "Elevating Learning Environments Through Biophilic and Student-Centered Design" Connections to nature contribute to physical and mental well-being. In schools that incorporated biophilic design elements, students had higher test scores, reduced stress, increased attentiveness and memory, improved cognitive functioning and psychological well-being, increased sense of safety, and more positive attitudes and perceptions of school. Students also have different learning styles and needs, requiring different types of support and methods of instruction to be successful. Students’ ability to choose the learning environment that suits them best stimulates interest, enjoyment and comfort, and leads to greater engagement, motivation, positive attitude and social behaviors, and higher achievement levels. Integration of biophilic and student-centered learning designs has been successful in improving academic performance and student well-being. The commercial construction industry accounts for nearly 40 percent of energy-related carbon emissions annually while American K-12 schools account for about 8 percent of those spaces, according to the Sierra Club’s Clean School toolkit.
