Leidos selected to prototype enterprise test vehicle.

On a chilly morning at the end of February, we officially delivered the first full-scale prototype of the Universal Stage Adapter (USA). The unit traveled down the Tennessee River from our Decatur, Alabama, facility to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, where NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration will perform structural testing for about 8 months. The USA, a load bearing connector between the rocket’s Exploration Upper Stage and Orion crew capsule, gives NASA the ability to carry astronauts and large cargo (satellites, habitats, lunar vehicles and more) on the same flight. NASA’s Artemis IV mission, which will be USA's inaugural flight, is targeted for 2028.

It was so wonderful to have NASA Associate Administrator, Bob Cabana, in town to visit our Decatur facility. During the tour, the team was shown all the hard work our team has put into the Universal Stage Adapter, which will become an important part of the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Artemis missions.

It is our honor to announce one of our very own, Ryan Leo, has been named a 2024 AIAA Associate Fellow. Associate Fellows are "persons who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done work of outstanding merit or have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics," and that could not better describe Ryan and his dedication to our mission. We'd like to share a part of his nomination that we feel truly highlights Ryan's impressive work for us and our parent company Leidos: "Over the course of his 20-year career, Mr. Leo has garnered extensive technology development experience from concept development through flight test and delivery of operational systems. His efforts have already made meaningful, long-lasting contributions across the aerospace body of knowledge, impacting not only human-rated spaceflight hardware, but also hypersonic technologies key to our nation’s defense. Mr. Leo is foremost an innovator. He has coordinated and led systems engineering (SE) integration across multi-disciplinary technical teams in numerous fields, including advanced propulsion technologies, controlled aerodynamic flight, Agile software development for autonomous flight, thermal management and structural/seal design, and affordable manufacturing techniques. He is a skilled collaborator, and nowhere is this more evident than in his approach to SE. He has led SE efforts across multiple organizations and teams to develop and integrate a broad range of technologies for customers including Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and NASA."
