Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald created Levain Bakery in 1995, out of their passions for food, friendship, and hard work. Competitive swimmers and triathletes, Pam and Connie passed their workouts by engaging in passionate conversations about baking, which inspired them to open a small bread shop in 1995, which they named Levain Bakery. One day, they created an ultimate chocolate chip walnut cookie to give them energy while training for a triathlon. They decided to sell a batch in their bakery, and they flew off the shelves. An icon was born. The cozy shop on West 74th Street became a neighborhood favorite and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. From the start, they baked everything fresh on-site each day and donated the day’s leftovers to charity each night, actions that remain solidly in since 1995. Levain Bakery now has a handful of locations in their favorite neighborhoods across the country with more to come, as well as e-commerce gift boxes.

This Tuesday, we were able to celebrate our sweet friend, Riley Cadiz's 4th birthday at our West Loop, Chicago bakery. In her honor, all our lemon cookie sales from the day went to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation to help fight childhood cancer. Chicago native, Riley, has been bravely battling leukemia for the last 2 years. A big thank you to our West Loop team + our managers Persio and Danyel that helped make this day extra special with a cookie cake and a "top secret" tour of the bakery. And thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate and helped us get one step closer to ending childhood cancer. We're excited to be continuing the work with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation at our Larchmont Village bakery this June! Last week, our Larchmont Village bakery hosted our first ever cookie baking class for a few very special students at 3rd Street Elementary School. This isn’t something we normally offer at our bakeries but we are beyond happy to be a part of the Making Caring Common program and their mission to make the world a sweeter place by teaching kindness and empathy at a young age. Our LA team, Omar and Walter, taught 14 incredible students, who exemplified kindness all year long, how to make our signature ooey gooey cookies! And of course the students got to take their hard-earned treats home. Amazing things can happen when we support our neighbors and communities. We opened our 14th location last week, this one is in the Flatiron district of our home city, New York. Designing a space for a brand loved as much as Levain Bakery, in the city where it's best known, has been slightly nerve-racking, but this coverage has me sighing with relief: "the destination boasts the sort of 'Levain aura' that New Yorkers have come to love since the very first bakery opened on the Upper West Side back in 1995".
