"You don't have strategy until you can say no, and value management can help you with that." Steve Chopp, CFO and EVP of Strategy at Lief Labs, sits down with our host, Greg Milano, to discuss the critical role of value management in driving success for mid-market companies in the latest episode of the Create More Value podcast. Here are some takeaways: 🔹 Leadership Vision: Value management starts with a team that has a clear vision and commitment to improve. Without this, even the best metrics and incentives won't drive success. 🔹 Behavioral Change: Changing corporate behavior is more important than just setting metrics—it requires holding individuals accountable for decisions and results. As Steve puts it, “Metrics are interesting, but behavior is compelling.” 🔹 Integrated Strategy and Communication: Effective change requires integrated planning, constant communication, and regular reinforcement. Tools like learning maps and town halls are essential in aligning an organization with its strategy. 🔹 Real-Life Application: Prior to his many corporate leadership roles, Steve helped Weber Grill’s management analyze a tempting, but ultimately overpriced, acquisition. The decision to “say no” reinforced their commitment to value management principles and built organizational trust around the process. 🔹 Consistent Value Focus: The value management journey is continuous. Trusting the process and sticking with it can significantly increase the probability of creating sustained, long-term returns for all stakeholders. Steve's experiences highlight that, while the fundamentals of value management don't change, the application must be tailored to each company's unique situation.
