Lin Health patient stories keep us motivated, and reinforce that chronic pain recovery is possible. Meet Marla, a professor, mother, and loving partner. Two years ago, Marla had a seemingly safe sinus surgery. However, instead of a speedy recovery, Marla experienced rare and severe side effects that forced her to undergo two additional emergency surgeries. After the surgeries, when Marla didn’t get any better, it became clear she had nerve trauma. She spent months in her dark bedroom, often unable to even bear the light from a screen. She struggled with everything from moving to executive functioning. Even writing an email to her doctors was too hard. Marla worked with her doctors at the Lowell Pain Center at Lowell General Hospital and with her Lin Pain Recovery Coach to treat the root of the pain: her nervous system was stuck in hyper-response. In weekly sessions with her Lin coach, Marla was guided through Lin’s care kits and program resources to better understand what her brain and body were experiencing. She learned the foundations of pain science, and began to understand how her pain signaling system was trying to protect her from danger. She learned what the pain-fear cycle is, and learned how to get out of it. After a few months of working with her care team, Marla was able to get her life back. She’s able to do everything now that the pain — and the fear of pain— had taken from her. Marla can now leave that dark bedroom and get up, get dressed, go to work teaching students, and come home to sit with her family for dinner. According to Becker's Healthcare, by 2025, neurosurgery is expected to be down 1,200 physicians, and orthopedics overall is expected to be down 5,050 physicians. When asked how practices should prepare for this shortage, physicians repeatedly said to focus on embracing telehealth and technology to improve efficiency and patient outcomes.   Arya Shamie, MD of UCLA Health said, “Preventive care and early intervention should be emphasized to manage spine-related conditions before they escalate. Additionally, developing collaborative care models with interdisciplinary teams, including physiatrists and pain management specialists, can optimize physician workload and patient outcomes.” We couldn’t agree more. A new randomized controlled trial published in JAMA Network Open comparing emotional awareness and expression therapy (EAET) to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of chronic pain finds: ⚫ A single treatment course of EAET significantly outperformed CBT in reducing chronic pain severity ⚫ 63% of patients treated with EAET achieved clinically significant (at least 30%) post-treatment pain reduction vs. only 17% receiving CBT ⚫ EAET was superior to CBT on post-treatment improvements in pain severity, anxiety, depression, life satisfaction, PTSD symptoms, global satisfaction, and patient global impression of change ⚫ Researchers noted the therapeutic effects of EAET are significantly superior to those of CBT in almost all dimensions, even after 6 months Lin Health’s Cognitive Pain Reprogramming approach applies EAET as part of a unique blend of evidence-based chronic pain treatment modalities, accelerating the latest research literature into clinical practice for struggling patient populations. Fibromyalgia is frequently associated with inexplicable long-term pain and chronic discomfort. But it doesn’t have to be. Remarkable advancements in pain science have come a long way. To explore a first-hand recovery experience, here is Raina’s story, in her own words:   “I had a nervous breakdown six years ago. I completely fell apart, which is when I started having serious lower back pain. I got fibromyalgia – I could only do one thing a day and then I was debilitated on my couch for the rest of the day. I saw doctors about it, they put me on medications; I did acupuncture, yoga, everything. “One day, my therapist told me about success stories with Lin so I gave it a try. The relief I felt was immediate. When I started the program, it was so validating to hear that I was not crazy, I wasn’t broken, and that there was an actual plan that could help me. My coach, Ashton, has been guiding me, supporting me, validating me, and pushing me beyond my comfort zone. We discussed so many fears I have had and how to overcome them. I constantly do somatic tracking and I learned to track my vagus nerve – it revolutionized my understanding of myself. I have a laid out plan, I just need to follow the steps. “Now I know that I’m not weird; I might be broken, but I know how to fix myself now. I can sleep through the night again, my pain doesn’t rule my day.
