Established in 1997 as one of eight original teams in the Women's National Basketball Association, the three-time WNBA Champion Los Angeles Sparks tipped off the WNBA's inaugural season on June 21, 1997 versus the New York Liberty at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, CA. A crowd of 14,284 watched as Sparks guard Penny Toler scored the first basket in league history, although the Liberty prevailed 67-57. Los Angeles compiled an impressive 45-17 record in four seasons at the Great Western Forum before following their NBA counterparts, the Los Angeles Lakers, to STAPLES Center, located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

What an incredible afternoon with some incredibly talented athletes.
Last week, WSF hosted an Athlete Ambassador Program (AAP) event in partnership with National Partner Delta Air Lines in Los Angeles. The Olympics-themed event invited girls from several local youth sports organizations to join us for a variety of basketball skills and drills led by the Los Angeles Sparks. 🏀🌟 Additionally, the event featured a star-studded panel conversation moderated by WSF Athlete Ambassador Toni Breidinger, featuring WSF Athlete Ambassadors Diana Flores, Angel mccoughtry and the Sparks’ very own Dearica Hamby who will be competing on Team USA’s women’s 3x3 basketball team at the 2024 #ParisOlympics. The event highlighted Delta’s and WSF’s commitment to supporting girls’ sports and youth development. 💪 Talk about a great day!
