Über uns

MabLab is building the first self-administered test to detect the five deadliest lacing agents in drugs and drinks — potentially saving more than one hundred thousand lives and preventing an additional five million hospitalizations every year. In response to one of our close peers who overdosed when taking laced drugs for the first time, we have made it our personal mission to deliver a harm reduction tool that will alert users about the presence of these dangerous additives. Our test delivers a result in under three minutes with unparalleled accuracy. Together, let’s save lives with MabLab.

On Overdose Awareness Day, we reflect on the alarming rise in overdose deaths and the public health challenges that we face in combating this crisis. The increasing prevalence of synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, has intensified the need for innovative harm reduction strategies, including the development of more accurate drug testing technologies, such as our 5-in-1 test strips. While individual efforts are vital, uniting as a global community expands our impact, driving us closer to the goal of preventing overdoses. The theme for 2024, "Together we can," emphasizes the power of collective action, highlighting the importance of supporting everyone affected by overdose—whether they are drug users, grieving families, activists, healthcare workers, or advocates. On August 31th, join the global movement, connect with your community, and harness the strength we have when we work together. “No one should stand alone in our fight to end overdose.”  https://lnkd.in/ea2c8xUP #TogetherWeCan #IOAD2024 #EndOverdose #MabLab #Healthcare #Startup

A study published in "Inside Higher Ed" highlights a significant increase in marijuana use on college campuses. The study found that marijuana consumption has nearly doubled over the past decade. While marijuana use has surged, the consumption of substances like alcohol and tobacco has either stabilized or declined. Such a shift suggests a changing landscape in substance use behaviors among college students, emphasizing the need for more targeted educational and support programs to address safety concerns — especially with the danger of laced drugs. Benzodiazepines, also referred to as “Benzo-Dopes”, are an emerging class of lacing agents that includes prescription drugs like Valium and Xanax. In recent months, more and more drugs have been laced with benzodiazepines, leading to higher overdose rates especially considering that they cause delayed overdose symptoms. Benzodiazepines in the unregulated drug market are extremely hard to detect and current drug-checking technologies like infrared spectroscopy often miss them. That’s why MabLab’s comprehensive test strip, which screens for benzodiazepines in addition to dangerous adulterants like fentanyl and xylazine, will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of users everywhere. Check out the following article to learn more about the steady rise in “Benzo-Dope”: https://lnkd.in/eYuaP_gX #benzo #accuracy #safety #biotech #awareness #mablab #testing

Many people are aware of fentanyl test strips, but with the rise of xylazine as a lacing agent, there has been a growing need for xylazine testing strips as well. Unlike fentanyl test strips, however, many xylazine test strips have been taken off the market due to concerns about accuracy. These concerns have been primarily the result of cross-reactivity, in which false positives may occur when another substance is present. To overcome that issue, Mablab is developing 5-in-1 test strips that offer unmatched accuracy for detecting the five deadliest lacing agents in drugs, including xylazine. With a focus on enhancing reliability and accuracy, Mablab's upcoming testing strips could become a crucial tool in the fight against drug overdose. Learn more about the recent legalization of xylazine test strips in states like Wisconsin through the following article by the Green Bay Press-Gazette. https://lnkd.in/eAWCBtyY #Xylazine #Overdose #Accuracy #SafeDrugUse #Awareness #Mablab #TestingStrips

Why is Fentanyl so Prevalent? Lacing agents such as fentanyl have gained popularity primarily due to their potency and addictiveness. Fentanyl is a synthetic drug that is fifty times more potent than heroin and morphine, allowing dealers to use smaller quantities to achieve the same or even greater effect. For that reason, lacing agents have been detected more and more frequently, increasing dealers’ profits. Likewise, fentanyl is relatively cheap to produce and can be easily mixed with other drugs to enhance their effects or mimic the potency of higher-quality narcotics — allowing drug dealers to sell drugs that are seemingly “better quality” at a cheaper price. However, this practice is extremely dangerous, as even tiny amounts of fentanyl can lead to overdoses and fatalities, contributing to the alarming rise in overdose deaths. The combination of economic motives for suppliers and the addictive nature for users has driven the widespread use of fentanyl as a lacing agent in the drug market. For a deeper dive, check out the article “Why Is Fentanyl Driving Overdose Deaths?” from Yale Medicine. https://lnkd.in/eAzDCZqy #Fentanyl #LacingAgent #Biotech #Overdose #DrugAwareness
