While driving along the border between Mexico, Arizona and California in 2015, Cristina de Middel happened upon the town of Felicity, designated the center of the world by California’s Imperial County and France’s Institut Geographique National in 1985. Drawing inspiration from this and the eponymous book by Jules Verne, de Middel began work on her new series, Journey to the Center of the World. The work, now released as a book and on view at Les Rencontres d'Arles until August 25, presents a multi-layered study of the US/Mexico border that aims to flip the narrative around migration. “This exhibition is not here to provide answers,” she tells Konbini. “But more to move away from this polarization of society which uses migration, in other words, real people and their lives, their fate, their dreams, as a political tool or a weapon to create further divides within society.” 🔗 Read the article: https://bit.ly/3AmSR7L © Cristina de Middel / Magnum Photos

"It was never just about the sport, it was also about giving Ukraine visibility and empowering Ukrainians in their struggle,” says Rafał Milach in an interview around his series on Ukrainian athletes in the run-up to the 2024 Olympic Games. In February and April of this year, the Poland-based photographer traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Kyiv with journalist Anna Conkling to document athletes and their pre-Olympic preparations in three disciplines: canoeing, gymnastics and wrestling. Milach explores how these athletes have had to adapt to wartime conditions in the midst of the full-scale Russian invasion. "You're always focused on your training routine, and it's kind of habitual or automatic, but there's always something much heavier in the background," he says. Milach’s images feature in the July/August 2024 issue of Men's Health UK. Read the article: https://bit.ly/3ysHQ4e © Rafał Milach / Magnum Photos

Raymond Depardon: “The Olympic Games is a very good exercise for a photographer… It makes you work on your reflexes, beyond just the visual. A fraction of a second, like this, suspended… and it’s always very photogenic.” In 1964, a 22-year-old Depardon traveled to Japan to photograph his very first sporting event, the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. From the tracks to the podiums, his images depict memorable moments of the events and would be the first of many Olympic Games that he has photographed during his career. To celebrate the opening of the 30th Summer Olympics Games in Paris, Simon Depardon has produced a series of eight short films with his father, as he looks back at a vast career of photographing the games. This coincides with an open-air exhibition throughout Paris featuring 16 images from Depardon’s archive of the Olympic Games. On assignment for DER SPIEGEL, Emin Özmen and journalist Matthias Fiedler followed Palestinian wrestler and Olympic hopeful Ali Aburumaila on his journey to the Wrestling Asian Qualifiers in Bishkek, Krygyzstan, with the goal of competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Born in the West Bank and currently based in Bursa, Turkey, Aburumaila spoke of the experience of training to represent Palestine on a world stage in the context of the ongoing Israel–Hamas war: “Their suffering motivates me to persevere,” he told Der Spiegel. “I will make them proud.” Moved by his story, Özmen and Fiedler traveled to Aburumaila’s home in Bursa following the qualifiers: "It was amazing for me to hear how sports could take him out of that whirlwind and free his mind," said the photographer.

"As an immigrant, you think that nothing belongs to you,” explains Enri Canaj during a talk at Inside>>Out, a six-day workshop with six Magnum photographers organized by Magnum Learn in Tirana, Albania. “But when I took the camera, I felt like I was in the center. Photography was kind of a step to explore myself too.” At the age of 11, Canaj and his family moved from Tirana to Athens, Greece following the collapse of the communist regime in 1991. Through his discovery of photography nine years later, the medium would become his passion and purpose, seeing him forge a practice that seeks to unpack notions of home, belonging and migration. Now, Canaj recounts his own story: his beginnings photographing the streets of Athens, his debut monograph, Say Goodbye Before You Leave, a study of migration and refuge spanning three continents, and how he turned his lens back to his homeland of Albania upon his return to the country as an adult and photographer.
