As VP of PR and Digital Strategy and integrated comms lead at Maverick Creative, I’m always looking to connect with fellow “digis” and hear about their approach to social media and best practices for this ever-changing landscape. I recently attended Travel + Leisure's first-ever World’s Best Summit at their HQ in lower Manhattan. One of the panels that really stood out to me was “Traveling in the Age of Social Media,” a conversation between Leora Novick, Founder, Persephone Social; Mark L. Lakin Esq., Founder of The Legacy Untold; Sarah J. Wetenhall, President & Owner, The Colony Palm Beach; Travis Levius, Travel + Leisure Contributor; and Jamari A. Douglas, VP of Marketing, PR, and Communications, Bermuda Tourism Authority. I enjoyed many moments of the light-hearted, nearly hour-long talk, but most significantly, I was reminded of one key theme that came up repeatedly throughout the conversation: the importance of authenticity in building trust on social media. In the travel industry, especially the luxury travel industry, it can be easy to get swept up in “selling the dream” your client offers - after all, we are their biggest hype people both on the clock and off. But social content, whether that’s your client’s Instagram, TikTok, or the proxy of a smartly-selected influencer collaboration, is more often than not the gateway to booking interest for the Millennial and Gen-Z consumer. It’s more important than ever for social media managers to ensure that a prospective guest’s Instagram vs. reality experience is a balanced one. Once that baseline of authenticity and subsequently, trust, is established - whether it’s as simple as the cinnamon buns being piled just as high with frosting IRL as on the grid, or unfettered access to the glorious amenities as advertised - that’s the space where a could-be one time guest crosses the threshold into ambassadorship - the dream for any client, in the travel industry or otherwise. Last week, several members of our New York-based travel practice attended Travel + Leisure's first annual #WorldsBestSummit. From compelling panels on the state of social media (spoiler alert: authenticity still matters more than ever to consumers), to an inspirational and informational keynote from renowned makeup artist and recently minted hotelier Bobbi Brown, the team came away inspired and ready to apply the insights we learned to our ever-evolving PR strategies.
