This summer, people living in East County will have a chance to learn English and change their lives through MCAEL’s Community Learning Groups. Launched three years ago to address an increasing need for classes in areas with a scarcity of English language programs and rapidly growing non-English speaking populations, CLGs have since reached 555 new learners and trained 21 new instructors.
Adult English language learners experience life-changing benefits as participants in these programs, from being able to navigate the health system and their children’s schools, to attaining better-paying jobs.
Our CLG program brings English language learning directly to the communities that need it most through partnerships with schools, community centers, religious centers, and employees in their workplaces. CLG classes offered this year include workers at Ruppert Landscaping company, multigenerational family members at Greencastle Elementary school, recently arrived Haitian immigrants at the Eglise de Dieu Silver Spring, and a class of Haitian and Senegalese immigrants in a collaboration with the Haitian Resettlement Working Group. Part of the CLG model is to train much-needed new instructors, ideally members of the very communities they serve.
