Today I got to introduce Mic and Sky to a tradition in my industry, the “Topping Out”. Legend says that Scandinavians would put an evergreen on the top of new structures because they would know that the structure was sufficiently cured when the needles would fall off of the tree or branch. Today we topped out at the new Rec Facility at Doylestown Township. A facility that will serve kids long after my own are grown. Last week I completed a week of duty with the Marines in Norfolk. On my ride to Norfolk I listened to our company podcast with Joe Reagan and on the ride home I listed to the podcast with John Grady. Fitting since I can remember completing final inspections on 3675; a project we did together, while wearing Service Charlie’s, in between drills. Last weekend we ran our second Fish for Life! trip of the Summer out of South Jersey...and it was a blast! The event brings together special needs participants, their family members, and a group of volunteers. There is nothing more fun than watching organic community grow when you put a group of strangers in one place and allow them to bond over common interest and a shared purpose. ...The best part is - by the end of the day - nobody feels like strangers anymore. ___ When you feel like you belong -- and are even celebrated for what makes you unique -- it makes it a lot easier for you to show your true colors and have fun.

The human side of sales: (Fictional scenario) Kerry works in BD. She closes a new deal that allows the company to hire 2 more people: Billy and Sarah. Billy ends up working for the company for 20 years. He grows with the company, excels, and saves up enough money to send a kid to college. That kid becomes the first in his family to go to college. That kid marries their college sweetheart and they start a family—- Sarah on the other hand, doesn’t love the new job but she meets a coworker, Jonas. They quickly become good friends and a powerful colleague team. After several years, she and Jonas leave the company to start their own firm. They find incredible success and fulfillment, change game for their customers, revamp how businesses run in their new market sector and hire 50 new people. Those 50 people…(you get the idea) ___ While Kerry thought her year-end bonus was cool, she had no idea of the ripple effect from good Business Development. ___ Sales are the gateway to individual, team and organizational growth. They also provide people with opportunity. Potential is everywhere in this world we live in but opportunity is sparse. The next time you see sales as a “dirty” word, think past the dollars and see the people impacted - who without that opportunity - might not be able to share with the world what they are capable of.
