I've lived and worked in the Boston area for over 14 years — and spent 7+ of those working for startups. But I have yet to have the pleasure of attending Startup Boston Week by Startup Boston...until this year. To make up for the years that I should have been involved — I'm going big. — Speaking — Podcasting — Tabling You can come see me live and in person in ✨ three ✨ different capacities. TUES SEPT 10TH: I'll be live podcasting with my MKTG WMN co-founder Natalie Cantave. We're going to be interviewing a few Boston marketing GOATs on the podcast stage for our podcast MKTG TLK. WEDS SEPT 11TH: I'll be sharing the stage with fellow consultant Matt Handy as we talk through how to STAND OUT OR DIE with differentiated messaging. THURS SEPT 12TH: I'll be back again with Natalie Cantave, displaying what we got going on at MKTG WMN at a table from 12-1:30pm. Best part of all this — the tickets are FREE. Vibrant. Thoughtful. Supportive. Just a few words to describe the growing MKTG WMN community. We asked Daniella C. what she likes about the community, and she shared: “I've joined workshops, met dozens of wildly talented marketers from all over the country, and, most importantly, have a fount of collective wisdom to draw on for everything from whether I should go to grad school to what digital tools are most helpful. MKTG WMN more than pays for itself in resources and connections!” Thank you Daniella for being a part of the community, and for sharing these kind words! #MKTGWMN #MarketingLeadership

I am OVER the layoffs. Over. It. If you've been laid off, I'm so sorry, and I'm here to help. I've never done this before. I work directly with companies hiring for their teams, not individuals looking for career coaching/reverse recruitment. But. I've heard one too many stories of people being laid off in truly reprehensible ways - I just heard yesterday about someone who was laid off at 24 weeks pregnant (WTF). So. I made this guide. And I literally guarantee that if you follow it, you'll land a job. Companies take care of themselves. You take care of you.

Great stuff from Derek Thompson last month about the "meeting-industrial complex" in The Atlantic. Some snippets: "Wall-to-wall meetings from 9 to 5 were pushing any creative or individual work to some period after dinner." "'I think we’ve hit the high point of max human inefficiency in white-collar work,' Jared Spataro, a vice president at Microsoft who focuses on artificial intelligence and work trends, told me. 'It sometimes seems as if the modern worker spends more time talking about work than actually working.'” "Gloria Mark of UC Irvine has found that workers require an average of 25 minutes to return to their original task after an interruption." — This is all too true for many people working in full time corporate jobs. I knew this feeling all too well, from New Balance to '47, and then eventually at each startup as they grew in size. I saw a consultant comment on this same article saying that all the work is done by us (consultants, freelancers) — who often have much more time dedicated to actually working. Here's why I think this is happening and what we can do about it: — People don't have a clue about how to logistically operate within the corporate culture. Understanding when to have a meeting vs send an email or communicate via Slack is not a skill that comes naturally nor is it taught or enforced. This is true of entry level employees as well as c-suite leaders. — People don't understand how to properly communicate via the written language. I took a seminar on business writing once, offered by my employer at the time. This should be mandatory at every organization. Understanding how to deliver the most necessary information up front, clearly, and in as few words as possible is CRITICAL. Then leave the context as optional reading afterward. — People are too scared to make decisions and commit to them. We end up having decisions made by committee, which, sure, can be helpful to some degree, but we all need RACI matrices in our lives. The efficiency that can be saved by eliminating a lot of unnecessary opinions is massive. I saw this work well in a larger corporate setting. Startups struggle though. — Employees and managers should both be held accountable to freeing up time on their calendar for productive heads-down work. At least 50% of your time should be dedicated to heads-down work, and that should be in the form of long blocks of time. Meeting-free days, calendar blocks, etc. can all be used to leverage this but you have to both set and hold boundaries for yourself and for your team. Otherwise, it falls apart...fast. Meetings — one thing I certainly do not miss about the corporate world, thanks to being a consultant. My day is free to grind and it feels amazing, with a few client meetings peppered in throughout the week. Are you managing meetings well? If so, how? https://lnkd.in/dwwW3njH
