"Peruvian government’s push toward public-private partnerships will help unlock infrastructure developments in the country," says Vincent Detilleux, Analyst at Moody's Ratings. There is roughly $24 billion in new projects on the way for auction during 2024-26, aiming to close gaps in public services. As Latin America's key markets adopt global accounting standards and capital requirements, capitalization at the region's banks remains a recurring topic of debate. In 2023, LatAm banks had a Tangible Common Equity (TCE) to adjusted risk-weighted assets (RWA) ratio of 11.9%, below the 13.9% global average. Moving to global regulatory and accounting standards will improve capital buffers and comparability. Further adoption of Basel III standards, along with international accounting practices, will lead to smaller differences between regulatory and core capital metrics, improving Latin American banks' capital. There's significant economic potential of quantum computing advancements, with projections of up to $1.3 trillion in value from technological breakthroughs in just a handful of industries by 2035. At the same time, the advanced computational abilities of quantum computers threaten over time to break current encryption methods, putting intellectual property and government secrets created today at risk of exposure. Latin America's banks will face challenges to keep their profitability metrics at stable and high levels in the next decade. Historically, regional banks' profitability has been well above banks domiciled in developed markets. However, these banks' capacity to originate future earnings will need to adapt to new difficulties, including a potential prolonged normalized economic growth, sizable technology investments and fierce competition among incumbents and leaner digital players. In addition, some LatAm banking systems will likely continue to face high funding costs, challenging traditional low-cost deposit bases that supported high margins in past years.
