About us

The MPSE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a wealth of knowledge from award winning professionals to a diverse group of individuals, youth and career professionals alike; mentoring and educating the community about the artistic merit and technical advancements in sound and music editing; providing scholarships for the continuing advancement of motion picture sound in education; and helping to enhance the personal and professional lives of the men and women who practice this unique craft. MPSE members are the artists who sculpt dramatic sound effects and invent new sounds for imaginary worlds. In addition to sound effects editors, members also include Foley editors who edit the specially created sound effects performed to the picture that are so frequently taken for granted as a natural part of the scene, including footsteps, key jingles, leather jacket squeaks and so on. Dialogue ...editors are the craftspeople who painstakingly smooth out the production sound recorded on location. ADR editors help to seamlessly weave the re-recorded dialogue that replaces problematic tracks. Music editors work with composers and music supervisors to spot cues and stitch together a sonic tapestry from the original score and prerecorded music from various sources. Membership in the MPSE spans four continents, eight countries and thirteen states. We have members in London, Toronto, Montreal, Sydney, Melbourne, Beijing, Paris, New York and Orlando, as well as Germany, Finland and both Southern and Northern California. We always welcome new members!

  • The Motion Picture Sound Editors is sad to acknowledge the passing of Leo Chaloukian, multiple Emmy- and Oscar-winning sound designer, sound executive and former chair of the Television Academy, who died at the age of 97 on July 18. Chaloukian began his sound career at Ryder Sound Service in 1954, becoming an award-winning re-recording mixer and took over as owner of the facility in 1976.pastedGraphic.png During his 60-year career in sound, Chaloukian and his staff at Ryder Sound won four national Emmys and two regional Emmys. During his time at Ryder, the company worked with documentary clients including National Geographic; David Wolper Productions and Jacques Cousteau; and on such classic TV shows as Lassie, Death Valley Days, Sea Hunt, Maverick, Route 66 and Gunsmoke. Ryder Sound also handled recording, re-recording and mixing for iconic feature films including Steve McQueen’s Bullitt and releases from American International Pictures. Chaloukian personally oversaw sound design for The Graduate and with his staff of audio engineers created the sound design for Easy Rider. Ryder Sound also contributed to the Post Production sound for the classic American films The Godfather, Chinatown, Saturday Night Fever, Love Story and the first Star Trek movies as well as work on Raiders of the Lost Ark, Tootsie and The Killing Fields. In 1986, Ryder Sound won the Emmy for Best Achievement in Sound for the TV movie Cross of Fire, and the Academy Award Best Achievement in Sound for Oliver Stone’s film Platoon. "As a rookie in the sound biz in the late 70's, Leo was one of the first post sound business owners I met while mixing at Ryder Sound. He was always pleasant and treated me, a young aspiring sound assistant, with the same respect as he afforded the esteemed employees and clients who worked at his facility. Later in my career, I was fortunate to collaborate with him on the Motion Picture Academy's Sound Branch Executive Committee. Leo will be missed and I hope he rests easy." - Scott Hecker, MPSE. Chaloukian served on the Motion Picture Academy Board in the 1970s and served multiple terms on the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Board of Governors, representing the Sound Peer Group. Chaloukian also served four years as Television Academy’s President from 1989-93. Chaloukian is survived by daughter Kimme Chaloukian Black and son Dale Chaloukian and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (Some material sourced from Deadline reporting)

  • The MPSE is sad to acknowledge the passing of Ann Kroeber on July 13th, 2024, at the age of 77. Ann was an extraordinary sound artist and friend of the MPSE. Her career included work on such films as The Black Stallion, Dune, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Dead Poets Society, and many others. Her collaborations with husband Alan Splet remain some of the most notable sound design in the history of cinema. When Alan died from cancer in 1994, Ann focused on sound effects recordings, and her incredible animal sounds were used in blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings and Gladiator. At the same time, Ann was great at connecting and inspiring sound artists worldwide, and sound people from all over the globe have been touched by her generous spirit. Ann was a testament to the power of sound in cinema, and we are collectively in debt to her fantastic creativity in capturing and designing sound. Here are a few words from sound designer Randy Thom, who knew Ann for many years: "I met Ann on "The Black Stallion." I was working on "Apocalypse Now" in the same building, and Alan and Ann asked if I could record a few sound effects for' Stallion," which I was honored to do. They had done some truly amazing horse recordings for the film, which I got to listen to and marvel at. Ann had the sensibility, technique, and style of a fine artist. I learned a lot from her and deeply admired her indomitable spirit, which she had to call on in the years after Alan died when she had to establish herself as a solo female sound designer in our industry, where it is still more difficult than it should be for women to succeed. Ann is deservedly a legend in sound design and will continue to be a wonderful example for us all." Ann is survived by her children, Lisa and Christopher Splet.
