The CDC Vaccines for Children (VFC) program is marking 30 years of providing vaccinations at no cost to eligible children in the U.S. in a recent Vital Signs report. Over its lifespan, the VFC program will have prevented over 500 million illnesses in children born between 1994 and 2023. The program distributed 74 million pediatric vaccines in 2023 to participating providers, and nearly 90% of children born between 2011 and 2020 received the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. In response to measles outbreaks during 1989–1991, Congress created the VFC program to support families and increase access to vaccines across the lifespan. Despite the program’s success, gaps remain for children who are uninsured and those living below the poverty level, according to the latest CDC Vital Signs report. NACCHO recently released a study that shows although staffing increased by 19% in 2022, it is likely temporary due to supplemental COVID-19 federal funding expiring with no expectations of additional resources. This has 20% of local health departments worried that budget cuts will happen in the next fiscal year. Federal funding has not kept pace with the nation’s growing public health challenges. Congress must support our public health agencies by investing in them so local health departments can continue to provide services that promote the health and wellbeing of communities, leading to a healthier nation.
