Back in 2001, leaders from about 20 locum tenens agencies flew into Atlanta's airport for a historic meeting. They gathered together to tackle pressing issues like skyrocketing malpractice insurance premiums and to establish a unified code of ethics—a blueprint agencies still use as a guide for their teams today. That first meeting was a milestone, bringing agency leaders together to lay the foundation for NALTO. Today, we continue the tradition of gathering in a new city each year to exchange best practices, discover innovative staffing solutions, and build our professional networks. What a week that was! Thank you to our member agencies for making the 8th annual National Locum Tenens Week an unforgettable event. Throughout the week, we shared important stats that succinctly put into perspective the impact locum tenens providers have on our healthcare system: • In 2024, 90% of the nation’s health systems will depend on locum tenens clinicians to deliver continuity of patient care. • Locum tenens providers care for approximately 7.5 million patients every year. • The size of the locum tenens industry was about $7.5 billion in 2023. • About 7% of active physicians—52,000 in total—have taken on at least one locum tenens assignment in the past year Without the extraordinary dedication of locum tenens physicians, CRNAs, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants willing to travel nearly anywhere to bridge coverage gaps, too many would have limited or no access to vital healthcare services.
