This Wednesday, August 28th marks Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (NHPI) Women’s Equal Pay Day, a day to raise awareness about the wage gap faced by NHPI women. Often overlooked in combined data with Asian Americans, NHPI women earn just 66 cents for every dollar earned by their white, non-Hispanic male counterparts. This disparity can only be addressed if we have full information on its impact on NHPI Women. In partnership with Equal Pay Today and National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum (NAPAWF), our member organization Empowering Pacific Islander Communities (EPIC), is leading efforts to ensure that all NHPI women are seen and heard in this fight for wage equity. EPIC is dedicated to building political power, fostering leadership, and changing the narrative by centering NHPI voices and lived experiences. This Women’s Equality Day, we celebrate women’s right to vote by urging you to the polls this November. But don’t stop there! As the bundle of sticks is stronger than the individual, so too are our communities stronger than individual voices. Speak to your mothers, sisters, aunties, and friends to encourage them to vote as well. Only together can we elevate representatives to fight on our behalf, and speak with our voices.
